Title: Kick starter slipping

I might be buying a '85 atc 250r from a co-worker but it has a problem with the kicker. The shaft has some play in and out, and if you kick it in the
out position it just slips all the way down. If you put some inward pressure on it when you kick it everything works right. Could there be a shim or washer missing on the inside or is there something that could be broken?. I don't want to end up with something that needs some kind of expensive work done to it to make it work right. Anyone ever see this type of problem before?.

Yes I had this problem befor on my last r. My problem was that whoever had it last assembled the kicker wrong.  I took the clutch cover off and used the repair manual and rebuilt it. You will have to take the clutches out also.

Sounds like the spring #7 may be broken. I have an extra if you need it. The gears 1 and 3 are a little more spendy. Thanks for the replies. I just don't want to get too deep with this thing. I don't mind wrenching on it, I just don't want to put much into it. The guy has developed some health issues and I just wanted to help him out but I don't want to get stuck with something I can't sell for what I'll have into it.
