Title: To run an air box or not too?
Post by: Branbro7 on February 22, 2014, 10:28:17 PM
Looking to run an LED or ESR air filter kit right off the carb for my 88r without air box and vent tube obviously strictly a duner. Am I going to have any issues ? Or is that mod good to go?

A great mod for a duner. Run an outerwear and you will be good to go.

Agreed.

makes the bike a little louder from intake noise but normally a good upgrade, I do like LED's tapered tube better than the ESR

I run two outerwears on my ESR kit. First (inner)one is waterproof and outer one is non waterproof. I run 70% dunes and 30% trails and my intake is always clean.

I just got my LED intake today and its killer! The filter is massive and welds are incredible.    Austin

What does the LED intake run? I'm in the air as well to buy ESR or LED.

Ive never had any problem running open filters (with a pre-filter) only thing to avoid is water crossings and if you must, go slow and shallow so you dont get the filters in water

Amen, all i do is dune really, well on the last ride of the year last season i decided i was going to skip across a little pond in the flats,,,forgot i didnt have my paddles and hit it going less than fast, neeless to say filter got wet and ran like crap rest of the day. Granted it was raining the whole time too. But definitely run the outerwears and stay away from moisture!

I hate to disagree with a bunch of people I like and respect but I don't believe there is any performance gains in running a filter at the end of the carb over the stock boot and box .I would love to see dyno testing proving otherwise

I know fact running on my wifes old z400 (yeah its a 4 stroke but they are all air and fuel) with no airbox lid had a noticeable increase-had to jet for it, toss the airbox lid back on not changing jets back starved it for air ran like you opened the choke full on -- again same deal on my old banshee restricted air-flow with the box on- in fact I have 2 friends both running cub banshees and just changing filters from the short K&N to longer cone style K&N made a noticeable difference -- in a nutshell an engine is basically an air pump the more fuel/air you can put in and let out the more power you make --

I have no argument with claims of horsepower gains from filter changes or open airbox I don't think you see gains from removing boot and attaching filters directly to carb.In drag situations it may be the only option. For normal riding  with carbs that will fit in the stock boot, the boot and box are the way to go. to put your filter out in the open for no gains in power seems stupid to me.I don't know or care anything about a banshee

i went out of my way to buy an extra air box for my second 250r based bike. both 250r bikes see dunes, dirt, dust and mud on occasion. I did run an ESR kit but it sucked on my atc's; both frames had severe clearance issues and I ended up jimmy rigging silicone couplers to work with the K& N filter. I love my ESR products but that one let me down a bit. anyways, I run an air box for both the atc310 and atc500R with no air box lid and uni filters but only because i run these bikes all over in all conditions.

i agree.  i could get into a fluid mechanics discussion again, but i could run into the possible person that may be misinformed on how air flow actually works.

There has been tests done on this. Not just with airbox vs no box. But length and size of filter. There is a reason why you see some long skinny filters on drag bikes.

And no I am not a Engineer in Fluid Dynamics but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.:eagerness:

i was referring to the deleted airboot.  the intake tube serves a purpose beyond room for an airbox.

Just go with something that is gonna make you comfortable
Personally I run the Esr setup ,I dune and drag ,just make sure everything stays tight
