Took my camera person to a nearest dune over for some action shots. Out of 15 shots coming over the top, got about 2 that were not blurry. I was signaling by the wave of the hand when I was going to grab the bars and fall off the top to the next crater.

But when she snapped the pic I was already at the bottom.

So this is about as close as we got to action.

Wheel in the air but this is the way most turned out.

Oh well, I tried. My riding group stayed home to work on downed trees in the back yard.

There were a group of cyclist that helped me load the green bike. They were calling the torn dunes moon craters. Said they had never ridden in anything like this even though they were here a year ago doing the annual trip.

Wow Tony, now that looks fun!!!!
not like some of the pics that ive seen, with gentle rolling hills. were is the fun in that,
the thing that makes it fun is wondering if I can make it without going over backwards or over the bars...
now that type of riding would make a west coast trip worth it!!!

Tony those pictures are amazing the dunes are huge and steep looking. I rode Glamis once when I was in Brawley CA for work and had a blast, but these dunes look like a different animal the winter winds must really blow the sand around. Are there any rentals available in the area, I google mapped it and the 41 hour drive my from house isn't going to happen anytime soon but my wife has family in Mercer Island WA and thats only a 7 hour drive:)

Looking back at the parking lot. Its behind the tree dune, and the one in front of the ocean is the backside of pic 1 of first post.

And a little to the left

And to the right the hills do not look like they have changed much. The trees hold it all together. But are fun to ride year round. Just to see if you can make it over the top of the last fallen tree.

There are 3 rental shops on the main entrance to Windy bay. Its 1 mile to the dunes from there.

Ah the "backcountry" - this is what Winchester Bay is all about!
Are there any rentals available in the area
Yes. Rentals are getting better - at one time you could only rent Polaris Sportsmans.. now you can get 400ex's and maybe even 450's

This is a view of superman from the snags. Biggest dune at Winchester

This is a side view of superman. The wind has carried much new sand over the top. It was not real difficult with the pilot cylinder powered 412. But I did see many 4 strokes not getting to the top.

Then the view back down. Its great when there is nut much traffic. Makes for good pics.

Just looking around from the top of the dune.

The dunes reform every winter. They are all smooth and boring by April. The sand moves up to the top of the dunes, then stacks up and slides back down. Its funny the way the wind works on the dunes. Actually blow the opposite way the dunes look. On a windy day you can watch the sand down in the valley blow up the face of the dune. These dunes have been changing a little every year I ride them.

WOW!!!
Those look amazing right now. I don't remember ever seeing the dunes in pismo form like that. The combination of lots of rain as you said I assume. Incredible.

tony I have been riding Dumont since 84 and have seen big changes in the dunes from that time.the bowl at Dumont use to be a challenge to get out of and now it not much of anything and long fingers of dune have formed in front of the main dunes from people parking.I kind of liked them better back in the day

We have more and more street cars and buggies damaging the dunes in the summers. Good thing the winter storms rearrange the dunes here. Loose a few gain a few. I have some pics of some new dunes but don't have the old ones to compare. I think here next month I will be able to get some more pics. March should be awesome.
