alright so i have been on trx250r.net for sometime now.. i never knew there was a trx250r.org.. holy shit!! now i have found alot of new info that i can look up on and learn about.. pretty cool to have 2 sites.. anyways this is my second 250r that i have built up.. i bought this bike for a grand and new it needed alot of work.. so i went to town.. all the way down to the last bearing and seal.. i dont have as much money wrapped up in it like some of the other builds but only because my wife would kill me.. alright here goes the photos.. let me know what ya guys think and also let me know what else i need to do or change that would look better.. as you can see the motor mounts were destroyed and also the frame was beat up and mangled.. i was going to buy a new frame but thought it would be more fun to just fix this one up..
-
Welcome over. . org is the place to be. Only good people with good info here. And no used car sales men.
Oh wow that frame is beat. Be sure to look for more cracks. And don't forget a gusset kit. Keep the pictures and your progress coming.
-
man i have toms of pics to put on here but they come out so big.. does anybody know why? im using a mac.. when i put pics up on the other site using the same file manager they come out normal.. its pissin me off!!

Our default attachment size is bigger than the other site.. I have resized your attachments above.
-
as you can see from the bottom the motor mounts were just destroyed!!
-
i cut the old mangled frame parts out and cut and installed new ones.. even thicker square stock.
-
Welcome! Im from Washington as well, just south of Olympia. Looks like a fun project, wish I had a welder to practice for this kinda stuff.
-
next i got pumashines gussett kit and tig welded it into place.
-
cool dude im actually in everett wa stationed in the navy.. and i took my frame onto the ship to work on it.. got tons of tools there.. keep lookin out for photos i got really in depth with the work
-
lookin mighty fine there sir! Just reweld the whole frame and put a clear powder on it! Give it that Raw look! haha
-
i actually lost the top piece to the swingarm bolt gusset.. soo i made a quick one out of a carpenters square i had laying around.. made it real easy to measure for the cut.. lol
-
heres the motor mounts
-
so instead of buying 200$ pegs i decided to just make my own and see what i came up with.. i took both right and left peg, welded a 1 inch piece of metal on the back inbetween the two pegs.. then cut 3/8" round stock into small pieces and welded thos inbetween for supports..
-
then i added the kick up and cut some sharp teeth in it.. should be good to catch my feet if they slide.. and also some skin.. ouch!!! also i was bored so i beefed up my brake pedal. lol
-
next i split the cases with a piece of metal i drilled holes into with the press.. used long all thread in the stator bolt holes.. nice and easy.. then i baggied up the guts and labeled them so its easy to reassemble.. then i had to bore my cases to accomadate the 350 i bought from esr.. as you can see the drill bit only gets so far down into the cases
-
sorry for the sideways pics.. i hope the moderator can fix that..
-
what i couldnt get on the press i cut out with a dremmel.. then took a pic with the cylinder on to see if i was touching anywhere.. i was on the sides so i removed even more of the cases with a dremmel.. hope these pics help ppl if they are boring out cases.. the work is easy. dont need to send them out to get bored.. save ya 100$ or so.. only thing that was a little challenge was i didnt have a rotating base for the drill press so i had to more it all by hand inch by inch.. made it more fun though!!
-
Holy cow, im impressed with this stuff, i'd love to have the means to pull this stuff off. Im digging your extra brace on the front of frame below the steering stem mount. looks cool. I am definitely going to do something crazy with the 86 i have laying around i think...its just a shame becuase its mint right now, i dont wanna screw something up.
-
first time ive seen that!
-
ii got a great deal on a wiseco clutch basket.. heres the work i did to grind the rivets off the gear and them placed it onto the new basket.. pretty easy.. looks nice.. anybody run a wiseco clutch basket?? how do they compare to the hinson baskets? or barnett? i hope just about the same
-
you might replace those bearings...
-
thanks dude!! the brace is apart or pumashines gussett kit. i got the best one i could for the 86. he did a great job making the parts.. they are cut so well im almost thinking he doesnt do them by hand anymore?? idk.. if so wow!!
-
ohh yea def gona replace the bearings!! lol.. already got em on order from honda east toledo!! oem all day!! i gota go back to work so ill post more pics up later on today.. keep following. my bike is a roller so i wana see what yall think i should do for colors in certain spots and all.
-
sorry for the sideways pics.. i hope the moderator can fix that..
Sideways is fine Pat, we are all used to it. It's the upside down that really screws me up. I just don't fall off my bike that much. Hope you got a hold of the paint shop. Don't need any primer on the motor. Urethane just looks like its wet all the time. Your harbor freight paint gun will work fine on the motor. Just needs to be about 60-70 degrees for the paint to lay flat
-
i bought a wiseco for my 4mil im getting done up, theyre just the same ive heard. but time will tell.
guy actually recommended a wiseco
-
you talkin wiseco bearings?? see all the research ive done i just keep reading oem.. i already ordered about 70% of the bearings so ill just finish that out.. but in the future id be willing to try wiseco..
-
thanks pumashine.. i will have to go to the paint store on tues cause i have a 24 hour shift at work. im really excited to use this paint.. how does it hold up to gas and scratches?? compared to powdercoat??

PCing a bottom end is a pain. Gotta remove every bearing or it falls out anyway. I can take a pic of my old green motor. Its had gas on it for the last 6-7 years under the carb.... Still shiny Polyurethane is like rubber. It does not get sandblasted like my sisters PC'd frame

haha, on the ship... that's awesome! Im not far from you, pretty much in the middle of Redmond-Carnation-Woodinville area. Good luck with the project!!
-
nice thanks for the pic.. exactly what i wanted to see.. i remember in like 2011 i read thru your whole write up on how to paint and how to polish.. i will do a step by step process on here with lots of pics and then maybe you can chime in on any more tips n stuff.. that way everybody can use this paint instead of rattle can paint thats gona chip so easy.. we can sticky that shit!!
-
heres my esr 350cc that i have already sent to neil.. heard and read tons of great things about neils work and even better he answers all my questions.. just passing down knowledge!! cant wait to feel the difference in power compared to a stock cylinder.. never had a big bore before.. does anybody run a 350cc with a standard stroke?? also gona run a trx5 pipe and a 38 a/s carb with v-force 2 reeds.. i hope its a killer!! reliable killer that is
-
Thanks for all the pictures. We are picture *****s here. My dad is retired navy. I use to go on his ship all the time. Its was always fun seeing all the cool machinery hilos and aircraft.
I may be wrong but it looks like your lower motor mounts are welded on incorrectly. Its best to bolt your motor back in the frame when welding in your mounts. Using your motor as a jig insures that everything is lined up correctly.
-

That depends if the cross rails are in the same position as stock. He did mention on the other site his motor sat a little to the right. Its best to fully mount the motor with head-stay and tack in the lower motor mounts. I can send him another set if needed.
-
now i did put the motor in with all the bolts attached and also the rear motor mount.. i do feel that the engine is to far over to the left "when looking from above going fwd" ill post some pics so yall can see. and where you from in hawaii bro? oke of my best friends is from hawaii. hes from aliamano. i thank thats by pearl harbor area.. we go out there all the time and pull into port. great times!!
-
here is the bike as is right now.. im at a stand still really waitin on bearings and seals and also neil has my engine and then ofcourse money.. or wife.. both are the same lol.. im prayin that the engine lines up correctly... fingers are crossed big time!! dont want to mess up the powder coat.
-
couple more pics.. got a nice fluidyne rad with the shrouds to match.. great deal on those thank ya very much!!
-
I stand corrected. Upon looking at your pictures more. I thought the flat part of the lower mounts were pointing inward. The motor does not sit completely dead center. It does also help if you use the head stay as Tony mentioned. That way everything is lined up as it should.
-
you think that could be an issue?? i bet for the pipe it is going to be.. FML!! and shit i dont even have a headstay.. never thought to get one..
-
As long as your front motor mounts bolt up you should be good. I once welded in the lower mount wrong and had to make custom front motor mounts. Sat about 1/4" to low. Pipes have alot of adjustment (give), you should have no problem with that.
-
wheeeew you saved my life!! lol.. hey tony do you use a buffing wheel to shine your stuff? im thinking about shining up these shrouds and radiator.. also my handle bars a lil better and even my pipe.. any suggestions on what to use??
-
hey tony do you use a buffing wheel to shine your stuff? .. any suggestions on what to use??
Yes I have 2 buffing lathes. Most use mothers aluminum polish. If you put the polish on the handle bars wrap the rag around the bar in a complete circle and pull back and forth on each end of the rag. As the rag spins around the bar it makes polishing round surfaces much faster. This method works well on bumpers and pipes.
-
your crazy dude!! how you comin up with this stuff?? lol.. ill see what i can do.. ill post some pics. tomorrow im goin in for the paint.. then start to get the parts prepped.. im excited!! im like a schoolboy again!! lol. just kiddin on that
-
your crazy dude!! how you comin up with this stuff??
Its stuff you learn in the parking lot at the dunes.:sign0108: The guy had a banshee with the usual 2 pipes. He polished up the mufflers to a mirror finish by hand in a short amount of time. I was like :sign0065: Oh, and that stands for "Way To Fast"
-
im having a hard time finding some polyurethane paint locally so i may have to buy online from house of kolor.. here is the paint gun i bought from harbor frieght.. got the ol insurance on her so everytime it takes a dump on me ill be goin in for another one.. free!! bam
-
hey tony here is some pics of the prep work i have done on some parts i want to paint.. cases will be red and i also have the side covers to strip but those will be black..
-
couple more parts.. nerf bars have been sandblasted.. those will be red. still have to strip the paint on the caliper with aircraft paint stripper.. also the louver will be red and the brake stay will be red. so as you can see i dont need much paint for the stuff i have
-

You should pull the drain plug and tape it off. You want to either paint with the side covers on or mask that off. I have a cover for the output shaft seal and cover for where the cylinder goes. Mask off the seal where the clutch actuator arm goes and the seal for the shift shaft. The sanding prep work looks fine. Paint with the 3 bolts snug under the ignition cover(holding case halves together). Before drying pull the ignition cover or masking and split the center cases apart an 1/8 inch so the paint does not chip after drying.

I have the same hobo freight spray gun. It didn't work right at first because there was excess silicone inside that needed to be cleaned out.

True dat......I have had these not work at all, last 1 run and last forever. It's good to get the replacement insurance for a couple bucks. Keep the receipt and when ever one quits working, take it back and get another. I have 3 all the time. One is still unused.
-
awesome info guys thanks.. once i get the paint ill post a step by step with pics on exactly what i did.. and great info on the gun.. ill take it apart and see what it looks like inside
-
U gonna acid etch them before ya paint um?
-
is acid etch like a cleaning solvent?? sounds like i need to??
-
Got my bearings in from honda east toledo.. Threw em in the freezer.. Put the cases in the over at 300*. Dropped right in so easy. Then i bought some polyurethane paint from pumashine and what does he do?? Sends me a engine stand for free along with the cylinder block off and all the supplies i need to properly prep paint.. Very grateful for the stand tony!! Honestly didnt expect that but one day ill get ya back.. Ill be moving to portland by the end of the year hopefully so well get to ride together one day.. Pretty excited about it!!
-
So i mixed the polyurethane paint to the activator 3 parts to 1. Then added about 10-20% reducer.. Now this was one of the first times ive mixed paint before so i had to read the directions like a 1000 times.. Tony did a good write up on what to do.. Add the reducer then stir 2-3 mins. Watch for bubbles. If no bubbles add more reducer.. Finally bubbles started to come up. Then i let the paint sit 15 mins. Then i went to sprayin!! Found a couple spots where it had some runs. Ill do better next time around and ill post better step by step photos.. This paint is awesome and a big upgrade to spray paint!! Hopefully this will help somebody with the painting.
-
Found a couple spots where it had some runs.
I have been told you want to get to the point where the paint is just about ready to run and stop spraying that area. I find that looking at the reflection in the light helps to see where the paint is a little ruff. Just need to hit that spot one more time. Looks great for your first time with a spray gun. You will never notice the runs so much as it is shiny as can be. Good thing you practiced on the nerf bars. They are hard to get done evenly everywhere. But it is good practice for the motor. They take alot of abuse and will chip first. After awhile you will never noticed the runs as they will be beat up.
-
thanks tony!! today if the wheather is nice i will be mixing the black and spraying some parts.. ill post more pics ofcourse. thanks for all the help man!!
-
thanks man

Today was very nice in western washington state. 60* to be exact.. Shocking to say the least.. So shocking that it rains here every day.. Hasnt rained in about 3 days and somehow there is a massive mudslide about 30 mins south of where i live.. 5 ppl that i know are missing.. Keep your prayers open please!! Now onto the quad.. I painted black and red today.. Both came out great.. But on reasemble of the rear brake caliper i ended up short for the rear bolt.. I posted some pics hope they are enough to maybe give a tip of what i need to do to get the bolt holes to line up correct.
-
Here is the engine and side cases i painted with polyurethane paint from pumashine . Very happy with the way they came out!!
-
Alright guys heres where im at as of right now.. Put the engine on just to make sure the front sprocket and the rear sprocket meet up. They did thank god!!! So far the parts are looking awesome!! Just waiting on my cylinder from neil at c-leigh racing. Also waiting on gaskets to put the bottom end together.. Im getting close... Sooooo close
-
Some more pics.. Whatcha guys think??
-
So what do you think of the Polyurethane paint? Your motor looks pretty good. The gas from the carb will never hurt the shine factor or make it come off.
-
i like the paint alot. its a great alternative to powder coat. cheaper route to cause you dont need alot of paint at all. i still have a good bit left over. ill be building my wifes blaster here soon so i may want to get some silver for it.. also the gas not taking it off is a big plus. i have found though that carb cleaner takes it right off so easy.. just gota watch out for that..
-
well i finished my plastics and pretty much the entire bike so figured id post some pics before i get her dirty again.. my right rim got smashed up so had to put the fromt mohawks on till i get some new wheels.. hope ya guys like it!!
-
some more
