Title: Hinson basket requires modifications?
Post by: Tbone07 on March 10, 2014, 03:34:37 PM
My Hinson basket is rubbing on the gear hanging off the crank....anybody know if running one of these baskets requires a modification? I checked the microfiche so I don't think i'm missing a washer behind the basket

You have to bevel that drive gear since its the older style/model. The later gears are thinner. Can use a bench grinder, just go slow and keep it even to take that corner off. I may have the sheet for that fix around here somewhere.

Yep, gotta bevel those teeth my friend. I know 86 has the wider gear, and i think 87-89 had the thinner gear. Only the wider gear requires this modification. Not a big deal though. Like 4WhLr said, be gentle and take your time.

Ok cool. I'll just take it to my uncle's machine shop and he can whip it out real quick. I'd feel more confident in that as opposed to the grinder. Plus it'll look prettier lol

Sandtrax was nice enough to do mine for free(I did all the install work, but just had them machine it some before I installed that gear). Doesn't take much, about a 45 degree angle grind that takes about 1/4 inch off the edge. I had heard that some of the Hinson's had that missing from instructions for a little while, but the 2 that I bought about 2 years ago had that in the instructions... Good thing your uncle has a machine shop :)

Good thing you caught it.
I got this one from someone that didnt know about that either. The guy knew something was very wrong when he changed his oil, but he just pulled the motor and put it on the shelf. I got it dirt cheap for parts.:smug:

This is another need to know topic. We(the highly paid mods) are going to put some of these threads in an area that can be looked up quickly for the next guy who has a question. Unlike the old site the Mods here are 250r junkies that know we must put together a need to know section.

Here is a picture I took a while ago comparing a thick 85-87 gear that has been beveled (left) to the thinner 88-89 gear (right) that does not need to be beveled for a Hinson basket.
