I'm putting another bike together and really think it would be nice to use newer brake components as well as the lighter spindle along with a better than 400ex brake. I really don't want to use Yfz calipers (if I did the typical 400ex spindles). I also like some of the 450r Aftermarket hub choices. I've heard 06+ is a replacement for 400ex/8889 250r.
Do they work on a 250r?
Will they handle correct?
This is a xc bike.

My Roll +3's have the 400ex/yz brakes. I bought a pair of 2006 trx450's (hub, spindle, brakes) to use on my Roll XC arms. I tested them on the +3's and they were pretty much identical to the 400ex setup. Keep in mind that these spindles widen the front by .5" per wheel over the stock 250r spindles.

i have 06 spindles and hubs i am going to run on my 87 with full flight +2 +1 a arms. it will be a while till i assemble my build
-
I am familiar with the 400ex spindles being a 1/2 inch wider, I am assuming by your post that they have the same width as 450r spindles. Thanks for the input. I really don't want to end up with a front end that handles bad.

I used the TRX450R 04-05 set up. Cheap find on eBay. Some say the +06 are better. I ride open areas, these work great for me.

Hmmm interesting. I heard the 04-05 were the ones to get and now i'm reading that the 06+ are the best? So which ones does one get and why?
-
The 450 guys prefer 04/05 that's why 06+ are so affordable. 04/05 fit better on 250r type arms and 06+ fit better on ex style arms or arms designed for ex spindles. Some arms have enough adjustment to work with either one. Idk which ones handle best or if the tie rods are at the right angle. I was close to running 04/05's on some Gibson arms then switched to pro trax at the last minute.

Joe,
When I was reseaching for my swap, that was the consensus. The 06+ has the closes geometry, to the 400ex. For people saying, that the 400ex/YZ setup is the best. I found the 04/05 cheaper than any 06+.

I'm currently running 86 stuff and bumpsteer isn't great and they are heavy...not super heavy but have some weight. Was thinking of switching to the 04-05 to help with the bumpsteer issue. I need endless amounts of money so I can try all options! LOL

You got lucky then cause like Was said earlier 04/05 is the more desired for the 450 so they hold alot more value.

As far as swapping on a 250r I don't know which is better...I used 04/05
I have an o5 450r, and several buddies with o6^ and their is definitely a turning radius difference.
-
I also used 04/05 spindles on my 250 r but i also have long travel
-
The pros have been removing the the 06+ stuff and changing it over to 04-05 stuff for years in both mx and xc. They do this for a front end bump steer geometry reason. If you are starting from scratch and the cost is close you might follow thier lead. They don't do it just for the heck of it.

Now my Roll a-arms are designed for the 400ex spindles, and when I tried the 04/05 spindle I had issues. So the 06+ are the best options for guys with a-arms designed for 400ex spindles.
Yes all the pros are using the 04/05 or the LTR front end setup

I have the 06+ setup on a XC 250r and it is working out well. I found 06+ spindles alot cheaper and I had the rest of the parts. Going to the mojave this weekend so I will let you know about bump steer.

I plan on buying a set of jd long travel maximum ground clearance a arms. It sounds like 04/05 spindles are the way to go. Does anyone see a problem with going this route? Maybe I should just ask jd? I also was wondering if anyone knows if the wheel spacing/width is different between 04/05 and 06+?

I have the 05's on mine with +2/+1 lonestar arms and couldn't be happier..
-
Ex and 06+ increase your width a 1/2" per side.

I just recently got a set of mgc arms from JD performance for my 450. Great product and great customer service. Dave is a great Guy.
