Title: Laeger XC "ONE of ONE"
Post by: bnau267 on March 23, 2014, 12:24:13 AM
Laeger - Narrow - CR500 - XC cc.  I plan to take my time on this one but it should be pretty trick when it's all said and done.  I'll be tackling the front end and swing arm next.

Sam, it's a one off Laeger that uses 450r pegs and heel gaurds. Very trick!

The one thing i've noticed on the "XC" Laeger frames as opposed to mine is the extra support bar by the lower motor mounts. Do you know of any other differences?

The extra curved cross member right by the lowest motor mounts on the bottom frame rail. My Laeger doesn't have those

I find that lower bar interesting too. I have one quad that is an mx narrow CR link that has it and I thought that it was an extra added support bar because that frame also has footpeg/pivot bolt area gussets as well. My other 3 fames do not have it nor did the other frame that I had sold- all narrow CR Link 2 were MX and 2 are XC frames.  I see small differences in the frames that I have but that support bar was such a large difference that I thought it was added with the gussets.  Steve, it's interesting to me that all of the LAE that you have seen had it.  I would be interested to know more about it.   Also I'm looking forward to seeing your new builds along with this new one of bnau267

That is easily explained; you got a custom Laeger.

Hmm alright thanks, I didn't know that. I'll probably have them add it in when I tear this down for a rebuild next year. I also noticed on my frame where it becomes narrow in the front, yours and every other Laeger narrow I've seen are solid through that area. Mine you can see where the tubes come together and all that instead of the flat piece. I'm probably not explaining that too well.

I was kidding about the custom frame.  They are all custom...LOL.  I've noticed that Laeger, Arens Bros, and other's make slight changes over the years plus they build to order.  When I have a new one built I'll request about twenty pictures before letting it go off for powder.  I'd love to have the front lower fender bracket mounts on the down tubes (guess Mark figured race cut fenders).

Post by: zcarlson12 on March 27, 2014, 09:35:39 AM
Lol I feel stupid now. I knew they were all custom but it makes me wonder why on this frame that the cross bar wasn't added and the solid piece isn't there. Ya I hear that a lot about the lower front fender brackets.

The XC Laeger frames have the lower front fender mounts, the MX do not.   I did have a MX frame that I had the lower fender mounts added.  If you dont want to add the mounts now there are other ways to secure your full fenders.  There are also XC and MX s-arms.   The XC has skid plate mounts and no chain guide and the MX has no skid plate mounts but has a chain guide.  There were some that had both.  There is an XC CR link s-arm on ebay now if you need one or just run the disc and sprocket guard. You are correct with the minor differences/ updates through the years.   You frame is just special all together. Quite cool.  I'm looking forward to seeing your build.

Front end.  Rear end.  CF Snorkel.
Haven't decided on color scheme but I'm leaning towards a stock 88 or 89.

That's a sweet Cr500 linkage swing-arm skidplate you have there. I was looking for one yesterday online and saw some pictures on an old atvriders forum post. Yours looks brand new did you just get it?

I thought they were out of business too.  I called the number (317-467-1701) on my skid plate and got Dan on the line.  They are in business and these things are about as strong as skids get as you all probably know.  Little bit pricey but Stainless is nor cheap or easy to deal with.

Not much has changed except for attaching the subframe and new OEM bolts.  Next update is probably a month away when my stem and tie rods get here.  Went with a chrome stem.  Probably sending swingarm and upper arms back to Laeger for chrome.  Might go with same color as frame for lower arms.  Was also considering OEM silver for arms and swinger.

Did yours bolt up? I can only mount 3 of 4 bolts without drilling.

Same problem.  The front one closest in the picture does not line up without me drilling/egging the hole (est 1/4" off).  The rear seems to be square and the other front hole matches up and seems to line the skid up correctly with the chain.  Guess something changed over the years.

I thought it was my swingarm...lol.  Glad he still makes them but I agree he needs to know his jig or bolt template shifted on him.  Especially considering what these cost.

Mounted up the heel guards to get an idea of how the fenders mate up.  My engine builder is sending the cases/covers out for powder.  The million dollar question is 'will the headstay line up with the CP top end?'  If it doesn't, I'll be begging Laeger to make me a new custom headstay.

my laeger protrax frame head stay (with stabilizer bracket ) fit like a glove to my 363 sphynx

just a tip.....clean ALL your mounting surfaces both motor and frame mating surfaces of all powder coating or you will be fighting the alignment on every bolt you install
Title: Laeger XC "ONE of ONE"
Post by: bnau267 on May 18, 2014, 03:56:01 PM
Will keep in mind for sure.  As far as the head stay, I think Tbone07 had some issues with the Laeger headstay and sphynx lining up on his build so I figured I'd have the same problems.  Hopefully it will be all good.

Post by: DnB_Racing on May 18, 2014, 04:04:17 PM
it took me a couple try's, My first try was installing that bolt last and was a fail.... I think the order that worked best for me, was bottom first then head stay, then rear then front..

it might take a couple trys but it should go.

either way good luck and be patient it will go without any Hammers or bending, I did use a piece of wood to persuade it a little and it went right into place

Schorr MotorSports, Inc.  He does not do the PC work but the company he uses is top notch.  312R1 had his Laeger frame and some other stuff done by them...QC cover was a perfect match to Honda OEM I believe.

Nothing like doing 8 sets of swingarm bearings in one sitting.  Took a while but it got them all pulled from the pro-trax so I'm all set to have the tops chromed and the lowers powdered to match the frame.  My stem should be showing up next week.  Now the big decision is do I simply buy new bushings from Laeger or get new bearings and have new sleeves cut.  These felt like butter with the bearings installed.  Anyone know a good machine shop within driving distance from Pittsburgh?  Thinking I'll have them ground to within tolerance and then hard chrome plated.

Anyone ever have to trim out a small section of the seat pan to clear the rear shock tower?  I hear it happens from time to time but wanted to be sure before cutting a hole in a NOS OEM Honda seat...

Gave up on finding a NOS RPM 250R XC axle so I went with their 400ex XC axle.  RPM modified a 250r anti fade (took a hair more than 3/16") so I had plenty of clearance for the snap ring.  Doesn't sound like a lot unless you've tried to run a R anti fade on a 400ex axle.  It worked out perfect like it was meant to be.

The hub to hub measurement is within 3/16" of the stock R.  If you look real close you can see how much room I have to work with now.

Here's the two skid plates I'll be running most of the time.  Scott is building me a new swing arm to accept both this and the traditional protect.  The new swingarm will run a 400ex chain slider instead of the R so it can be changed without ripping the bike apart and I'll be able to run Honda parts.

Dang! That looks sick man.

Was the swingarm skid plate mounting something you specifically asked for? Or is that how they make them now for ease of compatibility reasons? Would be awesome if you could just use 400EX or 450R skidplates

Thanks guys.  This build is taking forever but it should be worth it in the end.  I asked him to add the extra set of standoffs for the 450 half skids.  The standoffs under the axle housing are already an exact match to the 250r so it was a really quick and easy mod to just add the second set.

I'm loving the build. This is the frame id love to have. Dan had a little input in my decision with his laeger arsenal!

Keep patient as we grow impatient. It'll be worth it in the end.

Some front end action....old then the new.  The Red on the old set was a better match.
