gona be putting my bottom end back together tomorrow. just wondering what you guys are using on the gaskets when installing?? some kind of silicone compound or maybe a sealant?? id like to know soon that way i can buy this stuff in the am.. i have the day off and its gona be quad filled!!! yippie!!

If everything's clean and flat, you don't need anything but a clean dry gasket.

I always feel a little more confident, using a small thin consistent bead, of silicone adhesive with the gasket. Necessary? Maybe not. Piece of mind? Definitely! :peaceful:

^^^ Agreed. I use 1211 as well under the label of Hondabond 4.

I use Permatex RTV silicone on all gasket surfaces. After my last motor leaked oil all over the place from the clutch cover with a brand new gasket I got paranoid.

I like 1211 also but have used other silicone style sealers, but I put very little on, in fact you really cant tell I have any on the gasket except for the fact that the gasket is shiney.
I apply it using my finger and thumb and just work it in by rubbing it on between my fingers.
For the base gasket I use Loctite 518 gasket maker which is anaerobic sealer, meaning it does not dry unless in the absense of air so the un dryed sealer that pushes into the crankcase area will wash away as the motor runs and the out side can be wiped clean

Great tips guys.. I'll try some 1211. I'm guessing I have to buy this at an motorcycle shop or would autozone or napa carry it?

Alot of places don't carry Threebond 1211 locally, but most shops usually carry it branded as "hondabond 4" or yamabond. It is the same thing and is made by Threebond, just relabeled.

How about on the headgasket?

I don't put it on the head gasket, for oring type or original multi-stack metal gasket. Not sure how others do it.

I used 1211 once. it didn't hurt anything but can't say if it would keep a cool head from leaking either.

I used hondabond before when I was running the thin cr head gasket.. Sealed up real nice.

Three things a 2 stroke owner should have in their tool box.
#1 a pressure tester
#2 a tube of Three Bond 1104 sealant
#3 a tube of Three Bond 1211 sealant
Like stated, that piece on mind is worth a whole lot.
You can find the Three Bond on E bay or google for the closest place to you. Auto parts, most dont have a clue what it is.

How about on the headgasket?
I've always heard that any type of sealer on any head gasket is not a good idea because when the head get's torqued it can get squeezed into the water passages & affect coolant flow. I've never put sealer on a head gasket though so I can't speak from personal experience weather thats right or not.

ive used about every kind of rtv that permatex makes and it all works fine. tried honda bond also and it works fine although i dont care for it and havent used it in years mostly because its runny and might cause the gasket to push out if the mating surfaces are not dimpled (had a cylinder and case gasket push out with hondabond). used rtv on metal head gaskets alot and it works great for me. the key is to just use a small amount so it doesnt spooge into all the passages and port tunnels. im sure most any sealer will work about the same, its just a matter of which one you prefer

I never use anything just OEM gaskets.
