Title: Duner project
Post by: 1986trx250r181 on April 11, 2014, 09:38:37 PM
I have recently started my duner project and would like to share with you guys. I am using a 87 frame and for a motor I am going with a psi 425 using a yz490 rod with a kx500 piston should be around the 465cc mark. I will be using the psi carb for now, haven't herd good reviews for the carb but I got the motor running last fall and seemed to run great, so I am going to give it a try if it doesn't work out will be switching to something else. I am going to try running The led puma inframe exhaust. I am very exited about the build. Will be keeping it updated with pics!

This is the bike last year. I just put the motor in place to see how it ran. so this is what I started with.

I got the frame powder coated with a few other things. I will be using the JJ&A racing axle with a +8 swing arm and +1 drag/dune a arms. And a picture of the engine.

I think I will be going with 88 plastics. I have fronts in really good shape but the backs have a piece broke out of them. I was going to order some maier back plastic but im not sure how the colors will match up.

Looks like a fun build!  Which dunes do you ride at?

Im liken the white frame. Makes the lines pop when bright and shiny. Keep up the great build.

Looking good man, I would love to try a psi motor out myself. When I had sleds they all had psi, pioes, clutch kits and some other mods as well. I've always wanted one of there motors.

I am from Alberta, there are some smaller dunes close by but usually do a few trips down to Idaho or Oregon in a year. I have never ridden a psi built motor before I have read that they have some over heating issues and also some problems with the dial-a-dome head. On this certain motor the head is fixed so there is no adjustment. hopefully that will get rid of that issue. And I will be running a gauge so I will keep close watch on the temp.

wow I would of guessed +8 like your original post. that looks longer than my +6. Your build looks great.

Well it is a +6 from the 86-87 length. Has anyone ran the rippers on this forum, I was going to go with a 12 paddle extreme, but instead I wanted to try the bigger paddle. I will have it out this up coming weekend to go beat up on some four strokes. I will keep you guys posted!

dang dude amazing build! I LOVE that pipe! And i agree with everyone else, that white frame looks killer. I hope that motor works out too, the temp gauge will really help you keep an eye on things. I lived by an inline gauge on my 310 motor out in the dunes at Glamis last year; anything over the 230 degree mark and it was time to let her relax for 5 minutes; anything around 250 or higher i have heard will burn your rings up. Is that my old swinger? Cant tell, if it is than i really like the red! Again nice build man looks great

Thanks for the compliments. I really like the inline gauge went for a pretty good ride on it today and the hottest it got was 160 which really surprised me cause I have heard bad things about over heating with these cylinders. And yes that is your old swinger powdered red, it looks great and works awesome so far!

I now have the finished product, I am sure I will add a lot of little things in the future. I am very happy how it performs!

so how did those rippers work out for you. i have a new set of 12 paddle rippers i want to run for my puma project and im still wondering if they are too much paddle.

They are a lot of paddle. They sure hook up and pull hard up the hills though. If your putting down some good torque and your in the right sand I am sure they will work good. I noticed the power valve worked good with the larger paddle also. Good luck on your build mandom250r!

I owned this motor, it was super fast and had tons of torque. A really fun ride! Butttt, it did run hot! I ran an PWR radiator, a temp gauge and an inline cooler!! However, it apparently wasn't enough because she still blew and badly I might add. Even popped the freeze plus outta the side of the cylinder!! with that said it sounds like ur having some luck with it. Just keep a close eye on it!! Nice build and have fun!!
 Thanks Higgy

That's very interesting to here that you use to own this motor. I'm seeming to have good luck with it so far. I had it out for four days straight and I was running around 190-200, I did notice it would heat up a little more when I would pull a steep hill in 1st. Other than that I'm loving the power this thing puts out! Have you ever put this motor on the dyno higgy? I never got around to it yet.

So what other quads did you go beat on? How does this engine compare to others?

I never got to compare it to any bb 250s. But it sure liked to eat up the bb 450s and raptors! Its a true four stroke killer! I would like to see how it compares to a 431 puma
