Title: Project Younger Woman
Post by: rablack21 on April 14, 2014, 10:17:42 AM
Starting a new project. I'm swapping an 86 frame and swinger to an 88 frame and swinger = "my younger woman"
I picked up an 88 frame that was in great shape and already gusseted for racing. I also picked up an 88 swinger that looks almost brand new, so I will be swapping everything over to the 88 stuff. She will also get a few enhancements to sweeten her figure. She will be getting a brand new set of Rath Racing monster peg nerf bars with heel guards, freshly reworked Custom Axis long travel front shocks, brand new Custom Axis rear shock, 450r rear brake conversion, brand new dual row billet bearing carrier, and few more undetermined things.

Just took the front shocks off last night, boxed up and heading out to Andy @ Maul Tech ATV as we speak. Here is a few pics of the ladies together. My progress is about to start. Stay tuned!

Looks good! I'll be watching this for sure. Are those tony's radiator scoops? If so how did they work? They look good!

So how did you set up your measurements for Andy with the quad in pieces? Did you base verything off of the 86? Only reason I ask is when I tried taking my measurements with 88 dogbone it didnt reach the linkage with the quad 1 1/2" off the ground.

I wasn't able to give him the measurements for the rear yet. So we are gonna go off the original measurements from Custom Axis for now, then check the rear sag once I get it all together. He said their numbers should be pretty close for the 88 stuff.

JoePA, My time frame for this project is probably about 2 weeks. I won't get my shocks back from Andy @ Maul Tech for about 2 weeks, so I plan on having everything waiting for them when they arrive. I have to do a few things to prep the frame before it is ready for all the parts to cross over. I just installed a new steering stem bearing and seals. I got a few other things to do as well.

She started out being quite a diva. Someone had messed up the threads for the front bumper and then drilled them out really large to run a bolt through. I didn't want to do that. I wanted to use the regular bots. It took quite a bit of work and 8 hours later, I had redone the front end and the bumper bolts up nicely now. After that, everything has started falling into place. I have had to pick up some new bolts here and there, but other than that, I'm making progress.

Got the front end on minus shocks and front brake lines. Got radiator in. Just sat engine in and buttoned up all motor mounts minus the front ones, that needed repainted to black instead of red. Ran into one problem so far. My steel braided brake lines won't bolt on the way they are meant to due to me having the CCP steering stabilizer. Not a problem though; I order a 90° AN swivel fitting to run the brake line up instead of forward I will try to post a pic of what I'm talking about. So far, enhancements installed yet. Andy @ Maul Tech has got my front shocks. My new rear shock is on it's way from Axis. My new Rath Racing nerfbars are sitting in the corner waiting to be installed. I will probably put them on last. I ordered my new bearing carrier today. Should be here by Friday. Just bottoming up some odds and ends right now. After a little smacking around, she is starting to be obedient. LOL. This may come back to haunt me when I try to ride her! lol.

This is why I had to order a 90° adapter fitting for the steel braided brake line. *Note to anyone who doesn't know; AN fittings are freakin expensive!

Finally got my new bearing carrier in. I'm pretty sure these are still made by Burgard. I bought on Ebay by ATVonics. I decided to get this particular one for some pics I saw a while back by Hawaiiysr. I really like these bearing carriers because they don't require that special round tool. They adjust using a 3/8" drive extension. Hawaiiysr, that one pic is for you!

Here are the pics of the 450r rear brake system assembled. You can see from the pics how the washers are used to even the rotor up with the caliper. You might also be able to see that the 450r rotor sticks out a bit further that the 250r one. Something else to note. People have said that the 250r oem adjusting axle nut with work with this setup. It does, but not very well. The oem axle nut is almost to short to work. I had to adjust mine all the way out to get it to work. I will be swapping to a 450r anti fade very soon instead.

Call me stupid (cause I am) but can someone tell me or post a pics of what goes on these two pins right here on the upper frame rail? There were cut off of my old frame so there was never anything here. Sometimes it is difficult to tell from micro fiche on the frame what should go here.

I think they're just the new style spacer for the gas tank. They also hold all of my electrical or throttle lines out of the way. My '86 doesn't have them either

Update: got my front shocks back for Andy @maultech and got them installed. He also included they dyno sheet of how they were tuned when I sent them in and where they are now. I am very excited to try these bad boys out! You may have noticed that the shocks are now only dual rate springs instead of triple rates. When Andy spoke to me, he said that dual rates and triple rates can be set up to perform the same and that the 3rd spring is not really needed. He said that the dual rates were just easier to set up and that the dual rate would actually give a more plush ride. While this seems a little strange to me, I am more than willing to try it out. If it performs that much better, I don't really care how many springs they have!  Maybe if he see's this post, he will chime in and explain it a little better than I did.

Here is a first look at my new Rath Racing nerfs almost installed. I haven't drilled them holes that bolt them to their mounts yet; will probably do tonight. I just wanted to see what they would look like. I am gonna really enjoy using these. They got some serious grip!

LOL. I wish I was wrenching. Right now, I am sitting here at work, wishing I was at home. I picked up some better drill bits. I was having problems drilling the holes that pin the nerfbars to their frame mounts. I got 2 more holes to drill and nerfbars will be done. I put new brake pads on my new 450R rear brake system, but got to bleed the rear brakes now. After that, all I will have left is adjusting caster, camber, toe, ride height, and check race sag. I'm about 92% done. lol

Got rear shock mounted up. Finished drilling the holes for the new nerfbars. Once I got some good bits, it was like a hot knife through butter! Got the new rear brake pads on and rear brake bled. Everything is prettymuch finished on it now. My rear sag is a bit off, so I will probably have to swap the rear spring out for a lighter one. I will be posting my obvervations and experience with how this new girl moves and sways once I get a chance to ride her.......err.......I  mean....dance with her.

Final Update till after the race this weekend.
Everything is almost ready to go. Custom Axis sent me too heavy of a spring on my new rear shock. So they are gonna ship me out a lighter one. This won't take long to change; then I will be good to go for the race this weekend. Andy @maultech has been very helpful in getting me set up and ready to go with my suspension. I learned something new this weekend that I would like to pass on. Some of you may already know this. I knew there was a relationship between rear sag measurement and spring rate but I didn't know what that was til now. It goes as follows: For every 25 lb spring rate change, it equals a 1/2" of sag. In other words, my rear sag was 3-1/2", it is supposed to be 4-1/2". So to get the additional sag, I have to drop down 50 lbs on the spring rate. Thought I would pass on that little nugget.

I am very much looking forward to trying out this new suspension set up this weekend. I have high hopes for it. It's time to put the R at the front of the pack! A race report will follow after this weekend and maybe even a go pro video.

Just for a little nostalgia, this is what my R looked like back in 2000 shortly after I first bought it.

I have spent countless hours in my man cave burning the midnite oil with this lady of the night. She has seduced me with her curves and cut me deeply when she was not getting the attention she demands. But she is finally ready to get out and tear up the track. While she does not drink much, she is a smoker. A racer once told me, "a good quad should have a name."  Ladies and gentlemen, meet my lady in black.......Shadow.

A big thanks to Andy at Maul Tech for working with me on my suspension and Custom Axis for their customer service. My suspension feels more plush than it every has. Granted, I haven't ridden it on the track yet, but I notice a difference just bouncing up and down on it and even jumping up and down on the grab bar and front bumper.

Thanks man. It's funny that you say that. I will actually be getting some new race gear in the next month or so from one of my sponsors, Fly Racing, for my birthday from friends and family. The colors will be red and black with about 50% of both colors. I will have a race report of this weekend, assuming it's not a swamp race.
