Title: Horse Meat
Post by: silverlake250r on July 10, 2013, 09:41:37 AM
I want to try it! Have any of you had it? From my understanding, it is now legal to slaughter horses in the US, but they are still working on passing the laws required for the USDA to inspect the meat. Seems like I could legally purchase a horse at auction and then process it just like I do my deer every year, but could not sell the meat. I've read a lot of articles claiming the meat is tender and sweeter, sort of like a mix between beef and venison. The only downside is they sometimes use drugs on the horses that are not considered safe for human consumption.

Weird topic, but any thoughts?!

I have had it its call Cavalli (italian for Horse) and also Donkey meat i dont remember the Italian word for that but, ill share a funny story about it anyways.

My boss in Italy was taking me to a Food summer time festival in a small italian Village. he said Oggi Mengie Ass

my reply was WHAT? Ivano we are going to eat ASS today? (me grabbing my ass and looking at him very confused)

He said yes Ass we eat today.

me extremely confused more gestures of grabbing my Ass while repeating my words.

now all the people in our party me my colleague from croatia and myself are looking at him quite unsure of what we are going to eat.

When he said Jack Ass is correct in english no?

I Said Oh thank god he means Donkey not Anus!!

But to answer your question because true italian food has very little spice as they want to taste the quality of the meat they cooked cavalli for me which was basically olive oil some sprinkled spices and a bit of water with ground cavalli meat in it put on your plate like a sloppy joe but water/oil sauce. I did not like that way they prepared it the meat didn't taste bad just bland. That same day i had Donkey prepared similar to Oshu bucco, bone in and roasted for long period it was okay but quite a bit stronger taste.

i had cavalli offshore again prepared similar way as the story above but still didn't like it.

Im an adventurous eater tried nearly everything available to me while i was traveling.
