Title: PIPE CHROMING..Need Help ASAP
Post by: ATVRacing2 on April 18, 2014, 11:51:04 PM
Hey I am looking to rechrome my LRD Big Bore Pipe, I need to know if anybody knows anyone in NJ that does good chrome work. I am not really interested sending this pipe out of state, but if I have to I will but that is a last resort. I am looking for someone local that does good quality Chrome work. Any help will be appreciated if anybody knows of anyone. Thanks.

Also was curious on who Arlen Lehman from LEDPerformance uses to chrome his pipes, because I would be interested in sending my Pipe out to his chromer to get rechromed. Thanks.

Give arlan a call he  is very easy to talk with.

On another note if your pipe is used most chrome shops will not touch your pipe. The exhaust residue inside your pipe will contaminate their tanks. Ceramic coating can be done. Its near the same process as powder coating. It will not have that chrome luster but at least it will keep the rust away.

A good chrome shop has a tank for handling used pipes. It is an acid bath/strip tank of some sort that eats all the carbon from the insides of the pipe. The older the pipe, the more carbon build up, the longer it takes for this process. After the carbon and old chrome is removed the pipe is then again buffed and chromed. It may be more cost effective to get a new pipe from ESR. If your looking for show quality chrome, make sure you tell your chromer this before you start and expect to pay for it.

I am having a guy do all the prep work and he is going to bead blast all the carbon residue from inside the pipe. The guy I deal with does very good work so there won't be any carbon residue and he is going to bead blast entire pipe inside & out. The chromer won't have to do any prep work. Ya im gunna call Arlen on Monday to verify if he uses Pacific NW Plating that someone told me about on another forum, cause I know someone who lives in Portland Oregon and he can drop the pipe off for me. I know about ceramic coatings my guy does that as well but I want this pipe rechromed, so I just need to make sure the pipe is really prepped well before being sent out.

Thanks for info Pumashine, ya Im not interested in an ESR pipe. Ya im going to have my guy prep the pipe before being sent out to be rechromed. I am only concerned with who does quality chroming since I cant find any good ones that have good reviews in NJ

You are headed 100% in the right direction. What they call triple chrome plating is a process of plating they coat the pipe twice before the chrome. After plating, the pipe is rebuffed to have that permanent wet chrome look to it. Many shops claim triple chrome plate but do not repolish it. If it is not repolished before the final chrome it will not have that always wet look. I believe it is the copper plate that fills in the fine pours of the metal. After that is buffed out the chrome will go on smooth with the wet look.
