Im getting ready to dye my red clarke oversized tank to black in a couple days and I would like to try a maier 88-89 style hood at the same time. I have dyed plastics before from my RC vehicles and it works great but im not sure if it will work on the plastics that our fenders are made out of. Do you guys think this will work?
-
Humm im very intrusred in this....
-
I just remembered that I have junk oem 88 hood that I can use as a test subject lol. I have to let my tank air out for a couple days but once its ready Ill report back with pics.
-
doing black may work, but to do any other color you will probably have to start out with natural uncolored plastic. please post back and let us know!
-
What is the process for this?
-
just soak her in some rit dye and voila lol
-
Does the dye get absorbed evenly? I've never heard of anyone doing this but am curious now! I have always just painted my stuff.
-
I have done it many times for my rc vehicles plastic prices and it works very well. I have one particular piece that I dyed 6 years ago and it still looks great. I know it will work on the tank but the question is weather the hood plastic will asorb the dye or not.

I wouldn't do it on the tank. I talked to a shop about hydro dipping and they won't guarantee a tank because of it holding gasoline and that causing issues. So I would assume the same issues would arise in a dyed tank.
-
The gas won't effect the tank. The plastic asorbs the dye, so even if it gets scratched it will still be black instead of red. Hydrograph is like a film that lays over the object.

i actually talked to a guy over on .net about dying a gas tank and he said it worked good. i think his name was gooch.
-
What kinda dye would you use..Is it a dip and soak kinda deal?

Woops, somehow my last post went up twice. Sorry about that. You boil some water and add rit dye. Stir it up and drop in what needs colored and wait about 15 min depending on the size of object. Check to see if color is dark enough and if not let it soak longer

Do you keep it at boiling temp the whole time?
-
I hope when u do it you post up a lot of pics or video cause I have a tank I want dyed.
-
I'll be sure to take pics. You wanna keep it as hot as possible. It's gonna be tricky because my tank is friggin huge lol. My plan is to boil lots of water and dump it into a heavy duty plastic tote and then add lots of rit dye lol. I'll probably let the tank sit overnight and see how turns out the next day.

I use to do this also with RC parts. It would only work with RPM parts. I'm not sure if this will work our 250R plastic. I believe we are dealing with two different type of plastics. Not saying it will not work. If it does then great! We have another option for plastic colors. Keep us posted!

I actually did this to a braided red semi-clear covered brake line I had on a bike and worked pretty good using the black RIT dye, it made it black but not a deep black, in the sun you could see a slight redness to it.
I will be surprised if it makes a true black but it may still look good being a off black color, costs very little to do and if it does not work then just buy a tank cover for it
-
I have also done this to fuel line hose and believe it or not it holds the color for a long time, I did my hoses Orange and they came out pretty cool
-
I would of never imagined you could dye fuel line. What fuel line did you use? I honestly have my doubts about the 250r plastic but I'm gonna give it a whirl anyway lol.

Here's the update. The plastic from my 88 hood didn't work with the dye very well. It just turned it to a darker shade of red. The tank for some reason didn't work either. I had the tank in the dye mix for about 30 min and nothing was even starting to happen so I chickened out and the tank out of the dye before it turned to a shade of purple or something lol. In other words, it was a complete failure.

this guy seems to have it down:

looks liek you just didnt leave it in long enough or maybe not the right ratio of water to dye?
