Title: Paddle tires (again)
Post by: c_hustle on May 16, 2014, 09:47:23 AM
Are there any advantages or disadvantages using a 18" paddle? And what is the difference when using a 8" wide compared to a 12" wide? Thanks in advance :)

btw- this would be all on 8's

imo 18 is just too short for the dunes. You will end up dragging your chain and rotor through the crap too much or the skid plate if you run one. I also feel the 8" wide is to narrow vs the flowtation advantage of 11 wide. This is a very hard topic to get YOUR answer. Most riders have a different forward bite preferance and true need. You can get over hooked real easy and I myself prefer less hooked up then most for duning fun. Swingarm length is a big factor in picking the right tire for your needs. I would tweak my tire selection if I was switching between a stk 86 87 and a stock 88 89 let alone a +? extended swinger.

The best dune tire I had for a stock swingarm up to a +2
Had to be my old 20-10-8 8 paddle haulers
Made the bike sit perfect in the sand ,plus bieng on 8's they floated good

18's too small. My son runs 18's on his Suzuki  Lt80. I run 21X11-8 10 paddle Glider on my 344. 8 paddle Gliders work great too especially on smaller bore R's. Gliders are faster drag racing the hill and slide better on the dunes than the Haulers I've used.

I used to have some 8 paddle haulers that were on 18x9.5x8 turf tamer carcass.  There was very little ground clearance.  Chain and rotor would drag through the sand a lot.  They hooked up good and handled decent.  The paddles started to tear off of the tire so we junked them.  The guy that I got them from loved to drag with them.  He would launch in 3rd gear and claimed he did real well at pismo.  It was only a ported 250 with an old school esr pipe.  Wish I still had that pipe.

They also threw one heck of a roost.
