Besides the hubs, what else is needed from the 400ex to run the axle on a 250r? Do I run the R brake hub or the 400ex and what about the locknut. The carrier is the same right?
-
I had a 400EX axle on my 86 but I bought it that way. I think the 250r brake hub and lock nut will work but not 100 percent sure. Yes the bearing carriers are the same. Also pretty sure a 400EX axle is not as wide as a 250r axle.

You might be right on the widths. My 400ex was every bit as wide as the R but I seem to remember the hubs being about twice as wide as the R hubs. Feel like an idiot that I didn't figure this out while I had my 400.

I actually might go the other way soon. I got a 400EX i just picked up with a stock axle and might put a 250r axle in it.

That's funny. That 400 was the most reliable bike I've ever owned with exception to my YZ250. They can be a little stubborn to start in cold weather.

400exaxle I have all the r parts except hubs and axle nut

Cool. Does it end up at about the same width with the 400ex hubs installed?

I bought a 250r/400ex chrome durable + 4 on ebay. I found out later about using the 400ex hubs. Other than that I used all 250r parts to put it together. Seems I had an issue with the length of the threaded part your axle nut goes on.
I believe the width is the same after installing the 400ex hubs

Using the 400EX axle in a 250R, you'll need an 1/8" thick spacer washer, to go between the sprocket hub & the bearing, to space the axle out so the rear sprocket will be in line with the front sprocket.
You'll need the wheel hubs from a 400EX, 300EX or 250X, because the axle splines are different from the splines on a 250R axle & the 250R hubs wont work.
The G Force 400EX axle, is shorter than a Lonestar +4 & even with the deep set 4 poker hubs, it will still be 1" shorter than the Lonestar +4, but it sure was nice & chrome & $180.00 shipped to the door.
Dont know if it can be done now, but a guy got it for me that was on the atvnc.com site a few years ago. Good service out of it so far.

This is good info. I always wondered why the front sprocket was always showing wear on one side. Anyone needing the spacer get a hold of me.

My cousin has been running the G Force axle in his EX for about a year with no issues. He is not racing but the axle seems to be very nice for the money like Neil said. Under 200 bucks to your door from Ebay.

Tony, I parted off a piece of aluminum round stock to make that washer, same OD as the center of the sprocket hub. Boring tool to punch out the hole size for the axle & then used the cut off to make it 1/8" thick.
Now I suspect you'll probably polish yours, which will be a nice Pumashine touch.

Was there any problem with the seal not making it to the sprocket hub?

Is G-Force still around? The last coulle G-Force parts my friend got showed up in Tusk boxes about a year ago.

Not that I remember Tony, but adding 1/8" I would suspect the seal lips to be right close to the edge of the sprocket hub end.
Those carrier seals are double lipped & if the seal has been drove in flat up against the bearing, might be an issue of the inner lip riding on that washer.
My carrier, the seal had a gap between the inner lip & the bearing, a grease area I guess.
Now something I do remember, when I put that axle in & finger tight the axle nut, the curve part of the sprocket hub was up against the seal & sort of locked up the axle. That is when I checked the chain alinement & it was off just a slight bit.

I dont think it was to long after I bought that axle, some stuff turned into Tusk brand name, like they had Tusk nerf bars for 250Rs. I have seen as well, some stuff with G Force name on it & got nothing to do with bike or quad items, so it could be somebody bought out the G Force name.
