I think the 86 tank has a different cap thread?

I think that are all same thread but difference in 86-87 and 88-89 are the 86-87 has those 2 spacers that are bolted down on sides of tank. 88-89 do not have those spacers on tank those spacers were glued on fenders that is why on original 88 red fenders you see a dark black strip on front fender by your knee. All tanks are interchangeable and later tanks sold from dealer and that includes the black one sold later model tanks once the first generation models were discontinued

86 tanks have 3 threaded bolt holes on each side towards the top to secure the tank cover.  Not sure which year this changed but later years do not have these.

Those. 3 bolts are what prevent plastic from rubbing against fuel tank and causing tragedy. Like I said earlier tanks changed in 88 and those spacers were no longer screwed onto tank. They were glued to fenders

86-87 have a bigger hole for the cap to thread on.  88-89 are smaller and have like a clear plastic sleeve inside where you thread your cap on.  They don't interchange.  I just found this out last weekend.  Even the gas cap gaskets are different and the 86-87 ones are discontinued.

86-87 tanks are also a different color red than 88-89. 86-87 is passion red & 88-89 is fighting red.
