Title: Cylinder repair ?
Post by: broken1 on June 17, 2014, 02:16:28 PM
I picked up a box of R parts at a garage sale last weekend & the guy gave me an 88 paul turner cylinder with national porting that he was going to throw in the trash. It has cracks all the way through on the top side of both intake bridges. Can something like that be heli arc'd or tig welded & than ground back down or is the cylinder just a cool paperweight? Thanks.

the alum bridges can be welded and then a new sleeve installed, but as you know is allot of money by time you are all said and done.
No way to repair a cracked sleeve that I know of and the bridges would need welded while the sleeve is out.

Probably just better as a paperweight... By the time it's all said and done I don't think it'd be worth the cash.

The sleeve is in really good shape & has no cracks which is why I was hoping the aluminum bridges could be welded with the sleeve in place but if pulling the sleeve is required for the repair than I'm not going to mess with it. Thanks for the info guys.

Can the alum. portion of the bridge be removed. I have cylinder  that has some of the bridges ported away.

If the sleeve is not cracked then run it

If the sleeve was cracked at both bridges, I got a mod I can do to make it back usable, just depends on how wide the outer edge of the intake has been carved on.

If only the aluminum part of the cylinder cast is broken, then all you need to do is have those two pieces of aluminum removed from the bridge area.
I've seen quite a few of the OEM cylinders over the years, that have cracked in that area & still being ran, but theres always a chance of the aluminum breaking completely off & it could get real ugly :character0029::character0029::character0029: after that.
