Title: bracket racing tire???
Post by: GO OVRIT on June 24, 2014, 09:46:39 AM
The sand drag track here is having a big atv race this saturday.  (Newtowndragway.com)  I've been racing jeeps and trucks there since before it opened, but have never raced the R.  It's not beach/dune sand, but red sand with a little clay.  They dress it with a rig with rollers and tines.  My jeep with dot tires leaves rutts 4-5".  I have a set of sand sharks and several different 18" mx tires.  The quad is set up for mx with an 88/89 length swingarm.    Which tire would e more consistant.  I

What do other quads run there?

Quads have run on a different day than trucks for 6 or 7 years, so I don't know what a comparable quad runs.  All the fast guys were running either haulers or 4snow last time I was there, but they're all stretched out.  I've never run any paddles, so I don't know how hard it will be to keep the front end down.  You only get 3 practice runs, so I want to choose before the first round of practice.  Not looking for the fastest pass, but consistency.

You are probably going to do a lot of spinning on dirt tires, maybe more after a couple of round, maybe less.  I would think that the paddles would be more consistent.

paddles would be more consistent, but not if you are fighting a wheelie every time.  Maybe a low paddle count hauler, or even a V shaped paddle might do the trick.  Bracket racing is all about consistency, so no matter what you choose concentrate on doing the exact same thing every pass.  And good luck, its addicting

I would suggest making some struts to make the bike rigid. This will make the bike much more controllable=consistency. You could make some fairly cheaply out of square stock.

Run the sharks, you shouldn't have an issue keeping the front end down. On my roll no link, 17.5 swinger I have no problem with my haulers starting in wet sand. Just gotta find your butt spot, right lean, and you're golden. The sharks are a little less of a tire too, but will do 10x better than the dirt tires.

Front and rear for the struts?

I think I'll try the sand sharks then.  Now I need to see if I still have enough gear for 2nd gear launches.

Struts can help in the right situation, but IMO without a wheelie bar, a properly setup shock will launch better.  Track surface has allot to do with it too, and obviously to a point.

I ran out of time to make any struts.  I wound up trying both tires though.   The sand sharks lanched pretty good sitting almost on the tank.  It's tricky shifting in that position though.  I probably needed a 13 tooth  front sprocket, because it started feeling weak the last 100'.  The quad cross tires spun like crazy, but cut over a tenth and picked up 3mph.  I don't want to go changing my mx bike, but I do want to build another more dedicated sand drag R.  I met a few new R guys up there.  One's a member here, and another said he was going to join.

if u want to run that R the way it is, keep the shocks on and just put 4snows on the rear, leave in first and let it spin .  a girl on 660 raptor with 4snows won it two months there, whats your gearing now?

I run 14 36  with 18" tires.   I've got a neighbor with some 4snows.  I think they're 22s.  Are you one of the guys I was talking to at Newtown?  I was up there last night running my Jeep.  I usually cut a lot better lights in that than I was on the R.

I have a few friends going, but I don't know if I'll be there or not.  I sold my pipe and silencer, and am waiting on a new silencer to get here.
