Ok new guy and will have lots of questions. Just picked up a rolling 1986 chassis that is missing everything but the frame, front and rear suspension.
Hope to actually get responses from this forum as the .net has not provided much help.

Post what you are needing, this site is much more helpful than the other one.

Welcome aboard, please put a post in the thread to win a free motor stand. http://trx250r.org/threads/3830-TRX250R-org-first-year-celebration-4-sets-org-engine-stand-give-away If you would post a pic of what ya got and where you want to go we will all help you out!

Well can post a pic just yet, stipped the frame and took it to a welder to have some repairs redone correctly and have the frame gussets put in the vital areas. But as soon as I get it back I will post one.
I guess the first big question is do I start scouring ebay for small parts or just go for big purchases like engine? Would like to set it up for mostly woods racing with the occasional trips to the dunes.
Any recommendations on arms, shocks or things that I avoid?

Cool welcome to the site Mike!

(http://forums.trx250r.org/vbulletin_imports/949_2506_2017-04-18_9831.jpg)found a pic that I had on my phone front pic of the bike before tear down.

For woods run ur stock stuff and adjust width with rim offsets just my opinion. Leaves ya more money for other stuff your gonna need and mostly want lol. The want never goes away

i set my bike up for woods and occasional trips to the dunes and went with +4 in the rear and +2 up front.. horrible. i dont fit at all in some spots of the trails. others i do.. but at the dunes wide is nice.. i would keep stock length if trails is mostly what you do.

it really doesnt matter if you build the motor first, or put together the chassis and small parts first, because either one wont work without the other lol.
+1 on buying an esr builder kit and sending it to a reputable builder such as arlan to set it up the way you want.
it may be cheaper in the long run to find an ebay parts lot that has most of what you need in it, rather than buying every little small piece seperately.
also instead of trying to mess around with used electrical, just buy yourself a cr ign setup from the get go, and never look back.

Rather than eBay, buy it here. There are a ton of parts hoarders here willing to help out. I don't buy anything from eBay....

Good point, posted a wanted add with a quick list of everything I could think of off hand. I am sure that list will grow and grow as soon as I get the frame back from the welder and get it powdercoated.
