Title: ESR Engine Cases
Post by: madman636 on July 10, 2014, 11:38:40 AM
Having no luck finding a good donor engine for my roller I have been looking at just getting a good set of cases and starting to collect bottom end parts.

Has anyone built an engine from the ESR Cases, 499 for a new set beats the hell out of 799 for a set of refurbished cases!

They're on sale right now at that price - I wouldn't hesitate to buy them.  You can usually get used undamaged OEM center cases for around $400 too.

ESR cases are definitely worth the money.  those refurbished cases are WAY overpriced.

that $499 is totally bare cases too,,, so you will be over $600 pretty easy with bearings and seals,, plus the trans ,,,,  so figure $1000 to complete one ready to ride,,,

Has anyone actually built a motor from them?  I have heard about a couple but never seen one.  I know they look nice and every time I see a set on ebay they want 400 for a beat up set with jb weld all over them!

I'm building one now... The cases (.210" extra deck height, machined for a 78mm sleeve) with bearings, and the online discount, were $590... Plus another $100 for misc. gaskets and crank seals, then I paid just over $200 for a nice low hour transmission, counterbalancer and clutch-side components from dill250R.  Add a $230 stroker crank from ebay and I feel like I have a fairly-solid foundation for my next dune engine.  The cases, bearings and included seals all seem really nice.

Just from looking at pictures, it seems like they beefed up some of the wall thicknesses and around some of the bearings.  That seem to be true seeing them in person?

Yes... I haven't measured them compared to a stock bare set, but there are numerous areas where the casting appears thicker.

There is also some added support bracing around the counter shaft, shift shaft and mount area.
Much stronger then the oem but some things can happen here that might take out anything that wasn't 30 lbs worth of added strength.
You can see it in the 4th photo.

Oh yah if something nukes it's still going to push through it, curious how they hold up vs oem during a failure.  OEM look forged to me.

Pretty good price. Don't need a set of cases, but thinking about buying a set "just because".

I know when these first came out there was a few issues with them. Guessing ESR has everything taken care of?

I had to clearance some for the +4 crank, with the .210" deck height set.  The counterbalances also appeared to just barely touch, but after I mocked it up, there is plenty of room.  Everything else has been really nice using these cases.

Yep the work I can confirm... The only issue is the counter balance area needs a little tune up because of a high spot on the inside of the counter balance cavity... But all is good all mating surfaces were flat so everything sealed well and all bearings seem to spin great that were installed at esr.. Hope that helps
