Title: West coast 250r meet up
Post by: Mickkey82984 on July 14, 2014, 01:42:42 PM
I was just checking out the sliverlake 250r meet up tread and the first thing I thought was why don't we do this in glamis, Utah or Nevada's sand mountain? I was talking to aka2slow on .carlos and he planning a trip out for Halloween. I think my saber will be ready by then. We should try to get a group out there. Let me know if any one is interested so we can get some plans set in motion.

If you do put together a real date, please be glamis cause its the best. And although holidays are tempting I would highly recommend an off weekend. Anyone that travels to meet up and wants to have a great time deserves to ride when the sand isnt beat by rails from a holiday.

You should put a pole up to see were people want to ride at. And a time frame (this fall, winter, or spring of 2015).

I personally think glamis is the best spot
For all around fun
Pismo is too small and gets beat up
Dumont is great ,huge dunes but still kinda small ,me and dad can cover Dumont in one huge ride out during the day
Oregon does seem really fun ,I personally don't like the sound restrictions

But glamis is big ,endless ,has everything from small to big dunes ,any rider that's good can ride them
And drag racing is really fun out there ,there's also a huge vendor row and store

I've heard glamis for new years is fun

I've only been to glamis twice
One on a off weekend and one on thanksgiving

Thanksgiving wasn't to bad for me ,because after going to Pismo for many years on holidays I find that packed

I somewhat agree with Richard about big weekends especially Thanksgiving. It is a very busy place that time and riding that time during Thanksgiving you will and must be on your toes one bad turn and your either being hit by another quad or being run over by a 500HP sand rail . I have been going to Glamis and attending Thanksgiving weekend for over 30 years and I love it there during big weekends especially Thanksgiving. It is like you are at a rolling museum there, everything with a motor you see there not to mention all the older and newer stuff and something always going on there.
But I do miss Glamis when it was late 80's and early 90's nothing came close to having fun then those few years it was the best. It is so different now especially with rules and regulations while before it was everyone policed each other and most had respect for others, everyone helping each other out, and strangers pulling up next to you and enjoying a few beers with conversation!
But it is fun but also very dangerous.

I vote for Oregon!  :D

I'd love to get back to Sand Mountain / Little Sahara, Utah.  Besides Oregon, that's my favorite riding area.  Glamis was cool but didn't really do it for me.

Some of us at Silver were taking about Oregon. Higgy was pumping us to come. We were talking next year. Maybe even Little Sahara in March when it's still freezing here. I am going to look into a rig that can haul from coast to coast is strategic pick up points to get all the quads and gear out there. Then just fly there and spend our precious time tearing up some sand. and drinking...

A lot of it will also depend on the time of year.  Glamis is great in the winter, just an absolute nightmare in the summer.  St. Anthony is probably the opposite, a little hot but not unbearable in the summer, too cold in the winter.  Sand Mountain is too small, but if that WAS a consideration, it's too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, it would be spring or fall.  I imagine same with Oregon.

Agreed.  Sand Mountain, NV is very small.  The Utah one is awesome but can be iffy weather-wise in March.  Oregon has some nice riding days in the late fall through early spring but it's usually a last minute trip (i.e. would never plan to go riding a month ahead and expect better than fair weather conditions).

I vote for Coral Pink Sand Dunes. Place is awesome. After going there, I have no desire to go to Dumont anymore. Would have to be a fall or spring trip though, to cold in winter, to hot in summer. Well, could do a summer trip, but highs are close to 90 during the day, cools off at night, but can't ride at night.

I've never ridden Oregon dunes, but based on my experiences and time in other areas of Oregon, I could imagine that weather would indeed be a gamble.  For long-term plans and weather possibilities, I would say Glamis is a much better bet, as well as most any of the dunes in the southern-half of the west coast (dumont, pismo, Sand Mountain).  I imagine each of these locations has sunny skies nearly 300 days a year.

I didn't like glamis too much when I went, it was a off weekend and we were harassed by the blm the whole time, stopped at are camp 5 times in a day in a half. I understand loud kids but 5 30 years olds grilling don't need to be checked every 5 hours. My bike won't be fun for more than 5 second in a straight line but I can bring the 4 poke for long rides. I'd say start a poll see which gets the most votes. I'd start one but I not sure how.

If anyone is looking to go out west from the Midwest give these people a call. A couple years ago we were trying to get a group ride from another site to go out to Killpecker dunes in WY but it never happened.

Oregon June through October you could bank on it being pretty decent I think spring time March through may can be a gamble.  Sand mountain was cool and so was st Anthony Idaho but you can't beat the oregon dunes never hot never too cold all different kinds of riding and you can ride on the beach I would show up

I feel the same as Dave. The sand camping makes it nice to get a good spot and ride in many different areas. I prefer riding Winchester but the sand camping makes for great for our get together's with our peeps

Why couldn't there be 2 meetups. 1 In Glamis(New Years, since I am probably going as well as others) and a 2nd in Oregon in June when the weather is a little more predictable.

I will be bringing my Toyhauler so whichever location is easiest in Oregon that you can ride to and from camp is best.

You're talking about an improved campsite with hookups?  I believe sand camping should be readily available (even on the same day you wish to camp) with the exception being big holiday weekends.

So that brings up another good point - Glamis & Little Sahara Utah probably require camping from my limited experience.  Are there improved sites there?  I know in Oregon, we have both options available as well as easy day-use and hotel lodging.

As far as Oregon being on the poll is the vote specifically for Winchester bay? We have 4 different dune area's here, 5 if you count Christmas valley in central Oregon.

Yeah Winchester

I'd say Winchester Bay and/or Houser & Spinreel (20-30 minutes to the South of Winchester).  Depending on how far folks drive and how long they stay, it'd be a shame not to see some of the other riding areas.  Florence (30 minutes North) is usually crawling with Ranger Rick's looking to give tickets to 2-strokes.. I steer clear now.

yea anymore it seems like sand camping reservations are real easy to come by and it doesn't take alot of thought in advance to get a spot.  I prefer camping out in the sand vs a parking lot.  I have a 30 ft toy haul and just air down the tires and drag everything out there it's great and pretty easy.  Most of the spots will allow up to 5 RV's each so it's pretty easy to fit people in.

hey havinnoj, if you ever get bored and want to ride give me a heads up  I would love to hook up and ride with you.

I stay away from dunefest and the big holiday weekends, I just want to ride and not worry about all the people.  I think we will be down to Winchester the 15,16th of August for our next trip.camping in the sand somewhere.  If you are down there will need to hook up.  My wife rides a 250r as well and likes to get in there and battle with the boys on a few drag races up the hills and rides hard so it's always good times.

Hey great to hear patman there's nothing more frustrating then a fussy motor.  Yes you have to be a little careful out there with the drop offs good thing she wasn't seriously hurt.

Havinoj will keep in touch as the date gets closer in August

Hauser/spin reel is coos bay it's only 20-30 minutes from Winchester so it's real close.  I love Winchester but its small compared to hauser/spin reel bigger hills at Winchester but you can get lost at hauser/spin reel its such a large riding area

What would be a good time to ride Winchester I'd have to know months in advance to plan vacation

June to September is a safe bet for the Oregon Coast. I have found too much soft sand May or earlier at Winchester or Florence.  Coos Bay is good for May though.  Oregon is my stomping grounds I've spent about 300 days on the coast over the last 30 years.  Will always be my favorite; clean not dusty sand, a good mix of dunes and trails then of course the beauty of being by the ocean.

We are going to try Saint Anthony's for the first time over the 4th in a few weeks if anyone is in that neck of the woods?.

We need to get this going! I'm pretty much going to keep my summer open for the meet up. I suggest people throw out some dates that works for them. Time to make it happen. Thanks Loren

Let's plan for the Oregon Coast as that's what the poll shows.

I am open most months.  May - September are prime months with the peak summer months probably more feasible for most people?

I'm totally down. Spring break or summer works. I am going to school full time in January so I'll be fine in summer. Hoping to start rebuilding the 250r really quick.

Based on the poll results above: Winchester bay in July-August. This ride is my number 1 priority so I'll be there unless something catastrophic happens. So come on guys let's get it narrowed down!

Everyone should just take August off so we can all hang out at the dunes for a month straight.
