Title: Looking for kick start assembly
Post by: mgleason05 on July 15, 2014, 10:50:11 PM
I just picked up an '86 R and the kick start slips when i try to turn the engine over. As I have not opened up the case yet, I can only assume that the gears need to be replaced. Any parts that might aid in this repair would be most helpful. Seeming this is my first R, I don't have any special tools if they are needed. Those would also be helpful ; ) Please, no offers for galvanized muffler bearings...

Just an FYI check you vin numbers, the 85 motors were more inclined to have kick start slipping issues, but don't worry the 86 takes the same parts as the 85

Before buying a bunch of parts pull the clutch cover off & do an inspection of the kicker mechanism. I have an xl200 that was having the same problem & it turned out to be the spring behind the kicker gear.
