The 85 to 87 years cases were cast a bit different up front where the front motor mount bolt goes through compared to the 88-89 years cases. The 85-87 has a narrow gap about an inch apart where the case halves come together. The 88-89 year cases have a much bigger gap which is over 3" long as can be be seen below on the green motor. To the left of the green motor there is a 1986 sivler motor. Thanks guys for listing the number system for the true ID. But I get alot of how do I tell if I have a 85-87 or 88-89. Usually has something to do with the kicker set up on the clutch cover. But it is so obvious by looking on the outide what year your cases are. I have seen them mixxed from every year also. This was just a quick way to anwser a chatbox question zarathos

Thanks for taking the time to make this thread Tony! I had already discovered what I needed to know, turns out I have an '86 engine in my '87 chassis, or should I say I had. I had to sell my R on Saturday for financial reasons. This question came up during the sale.
