Title: Red Bud ATV MX National Kyle Burnham #81
Post by: Burns363R on July 29, 2014, 09:22:58 AM
Well its time for another race report from the KB81 Racing camp. It was a hard fought weekend at the Red Bud facility with its ups and downs. I want to start this post off by thanking all the sponsors that support me and help me keep moving foward. Special thanks to BDT Motorsports, SSI Decals, Rath Racing, DWT, Fourwerx Carbon, Oneal, ODI, Jet Trim, SVK, Tag, BVC Racing.

The Red Bud facillity is an amazing place. Its so large and beautiful, if anyone has a chance to go, i suggest they do.

I fought jetting most of the weekend, like i always do. The bike has moments of glorious power, but changes quickly with the temperature and humidity through out the day. The bike wasnt running 100% until the last moto. So this left me begging for more power in many spots on the track. I think a smart carb will be the answer for me in the future. These 4 strokes are making 60-65hp all day, and i need my R to be making that or more to keep pace with them.

+25 Class Report
I started moto 1 with a decent hole shot. There where 13 of us on the gate, and it was a 2 gate drop for a total of 26 guys in the class. I pulled a 5th place hole shot and finished in 7th place. I ran a good race, if the bike had been running at 100% i would have stayed in 5th place, i was able to hang on to the guys that got around me but never could get ahead of them.

Moto 2 was a different story. I decided to swap carbs to my 38mm A/S in search of power and more consistency. I was able to get the jets decently close and went out for the moto, the bike was severely down on power and as soon as i got on the track, i new it was a bad decision to swap carbs. I also got tangled in the hole shot from someone stalling in the first corner and put me near the back of the pack. This set me back majorly, as someone else piled into me and my bike was on top of his hood. I managed to pull it together and finish a solid 13th/26 in the overall for the class. I believe I could have been top 10 with a little better carb setup and no hole shot accident.

Open A
Moto 1 had another good hole shot i believe it was a 7th out of 18 in the class. I held my position for 3 laps until missing a gear in a corner. A guy got a good run on me coming into the next corner and tried to sneak inside me. He ended up crashing into me and the inner barrier causing him to flip up on top of me and my bike which caused me to stall. I got going quickly but lost 3 positions and finished the race in a sold 10th place.

Moto 2 the jetting was best it was all weekend. I had a bad gate pick and was clear to the outside of the hole shot, which is never a good thing at red bud. I had a long road to hoe to the first corner, and a weak leave on the gate didnt help me, i found my self mid back by the first corner and managed to hang on to a 9th place for the entire moto until the last lap. 10th place was hot on my tail for a couple laps, and a missed gear on the last lap cost me that position. So i ended up 10th out of the 18 guys.

The weekend went well, the track has some very neat jumps, but gets very very rough because it is sandy soil. The ruts also get extremely deep so passing is difficult in the corners.

Here is a cut video from the weekend, i didn't have my usual camera operator with me. Also some where in the video you will notice im a long ways behind a large group of guys, that was the moto i got tangled in the whole shot and was trying to real them back in.

Im in between on them.  They are plush and nice in the rough stuff, but they do not offer enough bottom resistance when i run them plush, so Andy is going to raise my middle cross over to get me on the main a little sooner.   I think i just need to loose 20lbs and call it a day.

I think I am currently having the same problem you are. LOL. Mine feel really good, but I need just a bit more bottoming resistance. I need to lose about 25 lbs myself.

Mony Howe raced with his Roll 310, and so did Pete (RedRide55 I think)   With his 431 puma Laeger.    Also there was a British guy with a laeger 310 bike.

The British guy said he was running a Paul turner 265 pv motor.
And did you get that axle and anti fade from kt23 bud. I got mine all greased back up and back in my bike last nite bud. Soon to have the top end done after work tonight as well.

Burns363r, Thanks so much for posting stories and video of your racing. I am jealous. Even at my best I couldn't jump or turn worth a you know what. All I could do was go straight and smash through stuff.....o.k. I was purty good at making a quad get to the finish line of a long race.
My only beef is that you misuse the term "hole shot". A "hole shot" is when you get the first turn in first place. Period. There is no such thing as a fifth place hole shot.
You probably think I'm a total dick, but I'm not. I'm just...like.....3/4 dick. Please keep showing video and race safe.

Lol, I am glad someone else feels this way. With no disrespect to the op I get sick and tired of people misusing racing terms that is all to common nowadays.

My only "beef" with your post is the holeshot is not the one who gets to the first turn first, it is the one who exits the first turn in first place ;)

Well all the nationals I go to its called the holeshot for the start of the race.  If you get the holeshot you are in first place.  But non the less ever racer participates it he holeshot.  So when your 5th they say you got 5th in the holeshot.   Guess someone better go educate the AMA.

Watch any AMA supercross, MX bike National, AMA EDT National. There is a white line after the first turn to determine who gets the "holeshot" after that you get just a 5th place start. Been that way for the last 30 plus years of my racing.

Holeshot definition...The term is used in motorcycle racing, off-road racing (but also motorsport racing in general) for the rider who is the first one through the first turn. In some cases a holeshot award will be given, which is a prize separate from winning the race.

My thoughts exactly^^^^. Right or wrong, as Kyle stated, I have known many racers that use the same terminology, yes all the way up to the National level. Who the frick cares? It's his thread. He can call it what he wants to.

I get what your saying Bill. Im not an idiot and have been around the racing scene foe 15 years.   But that doesnt change what people call it these days.  Hence thats why i call it what i do.  Right or wrong it is what it is.

I think i need a break from both forums, this stuff is starting to wear me out.  Peace.

Not busting on kyle but it eats me up too. I guess it is the old school guys that hate it so much. We are from a world that was different where everyone didn't get a trophy, etc. All riders participate in the start and one gets the holeshot. That is the problem and why in todays day and age everyone gets to use the term holeshot.

In 5 to 10 years it will be what did you get at the win... I got the win 9th etc....

One person gets the holeshot but nowdays for some reason you can get 20th holeshot instead of 20th on the start. It is just one of those things.
Again I am not targeting kyle with this, there are more and more people saying it wrong and I am sure he has heard it used that way 500 times, but that doesn't make it right.

edit I see other opinions posted and I did not post to bust on kyle or his thread but why should it be wrong to help teach someone how to use the word correct? Is that not what these forums are for? To help teach others what we know? Maybe the wrong thread for it I guess and it takes the thread off topic but the topic in general being discussed shouldn't be wrong.
I may delete....

I always understood it to be the first person out of turn 1, got the holeshot. But i'm not too worried about what others call it.

Kyle, I wasn't trying to start a argument or anything. It is more about educating the masses. etccb sums it up perfectly and probably says it better than i did...lol.

Yah kyle, those bearings have about 6 rides on them since new replacement. And yes it is a twin row
