Might as well get this build thread started! 02 Laeger wide,Cr500 rear.Heres the story behind ole Trailer Trash. Found this gem on craigslist,it had actually been listed for 2 weeks, there were no pics and it didnt mention that it was a Laeger frame until the end of the description. Called, got pics, confirmed, got the cash! Laid off right now and had just finished my 86' TT build, had maybe 2hrs max on it..lol Next day I make a 10hr round trip to pick her up. Literally out in BFE,down a gravel road, turn off to a DIRT lane to find a trailer park! Haggled a little bit, dont want to stick around too long down there(banjo country),hand the guy $1700 and off I went!
No as the pics show it did need a rehab for sure. Chrome was looking bad, junk Ftz pipe blew oil all over everything, all bearing shot and the Lrd pro-x 265 pv cylinder had a cracked sleeve. Did have alot of stuff I was able to clean and reuse or sell. Not a whole lot is being reused other than the frame and sub,pro-trax front and the shortend cr500 swingarm. Parted out the 86' to fund the rehab. Thank you to everyone that has bought from or sold me parts!! I will have more pics to come next week when parts come back from powder.

You can tell in the first two pics how well it was previously treated, parked in a garbage pile open air shed.(http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz242/04450r/photo2_zps272194f7.jpg)(http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz242/04450r/photo1_zps8c3e4b66.jpg)(http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz242/04450r/photo_zpscc879bea.jpg)
-
damn....not a bad deal at all sir!
-
Great deal... its the build and restoration that we put into these that makes them that much more enjoyable. Cant wait to watch the rest unfold
-
Thank you guys! I would still like to know who originally built this in 02' as a mx quad. Have 2 previous owners names but havent come up with anything.......Yet!
-
Might want to start looking online photos from local district races from back in the day. I did that on the lasst one I bought and cam up with all kinds of photos what it looked like in the past. Thats a hell of deal its not to often these come for sale especially for that price. Looking forward to watching it all come together.
-
That is a good idea. Heres what I do know as far as ownership goes. Ryan Lewis of Pollard ARkansas sold it to Keith **** of Sikestim MO and then later sold it to the guy I bought it from. My guess is the MO guy set it up for TT. Any help would be great if you guys recognize a name!
Haha,censored his last name,sounds like Rick,but with a D...
-
Might get tricky when its been all over. Ill see if I can do some digging if you txt me his name.
-
You wouldn't part with those rear wheels and tires would you?
-
Good score. Looks like it was a great quad at one point in time. Glad to see that it's gonna be nice again instead of just some trashed out quad.
-
Sorry yaegerb, wheels are at the powder coater. Thank you Mennis, its a shame that somebody spent alot of money back in 02' to build this only for it to get trashed. Shes got a good home now and well on her way to a new life!
-
Wonder how many trailer park laps she's made and what his record was LOL. I'm betting the trailer park guy never even raced it(except around the park).
-
Cool story to go with it. Funny how sometimes you find this stuff where you would least expect it. Can't wait to see it as it comes along. Are you fixing the LRD cylinder?
-
Mennis I just about spit my Pepsi out reading that! No he didnt race it,except around the park! Haha I knew when we got there it was going to be a quick transaction, dogs ran up to use and he pumched the dogs! Not cool,we spent less than 5 minutes there! Dan,shes well on her way with all the parts Ive been collecting(lol),and there was ALOT of weight savings haha. The swingarms was crudely shortened 2",which I had fixed, still -2" but looks amazing now. Red thats exactly right,I just stumbled on it and had to have it. I sold the Lrd cyl and the +4 crank, bought a Baldwin pro-x 265pv that was from the Tim Farr Laeger that 312R1 parted out along with the Sparks TT. More on the motor when its done.
-
I have a sparks TT(pipe and sparks silencer) I haven't tried yet, Also have a sparks hi rev(with a pro circuit silencer) that I love. Sounds like it's gonna turn out great for ya(the build). Can't wait to see it. post up some pics of the shortened swinger please. I have 2 shortened oem swingers(one done by me) and like seeing that stuff.
-
I had a Sparks mx my 86' and was very happy with it,this TT came with a DG silencer since thats what Tim used, sponsorship. Thought I had before and after pics of the swinger but must've erased them. When they shortened the Laeger swingarm the carrier housing was crooked by 1/8". They also cut off the round tube gussets for basically flat stock. We cut the housing and gussets off, made a jig to align the arm to the housing then welded it up. Replaced the gussets back to round tube like it should've been done!
-
Motors almost done, heres a few pic.

-
Looking Great. Nice Score!!!
-
Dang that motor looks good!
-
That motor is beautiful. Who cleaned up and refinished the cases?
-
Thanks guys!.. Those cases had atleast 3 coats of paint on them when I got them, not to mention a bunch of burnt 2 stroke oil. They had no cracks or breaks though! I spent most of a day stripping paint, cleaning and painting them. Used the K&S bearings with a new Hot Rod long rod crank. Trans is 88-89 with a full Hinson 8 plate setup using oem plates and fibers. Piston is a 68mm Wiseco pro-lite Cr250 flat top. The pro-x pv cylinder was ported by Baldwin, this came off if the Tim Farr Laeger that Steve(312R1) parted out. Dome was cut to allow the piston to come up out of the cylinder. Cr250 reed cage and intake with spacer using Boyesen reeds. Unknown exhaust flange. 00 cr250 stator and flywheel,01' cr250 cdi with 02' coil. Frame and suspension should be back from powder this week, ready to drop it in!!
-
Deuce, that was all me on the case. One can of oven cleaner and one can of paint stripper,oh and a few scratch pads and old tooth brushes..lol I was lucky though, once I finally got them stripped down they were in really good shape. Just had some very minor scratches in the sprocket area that I lightly sanded down. No cracks and no repairs on these!
-

Hmm... I may have to send you some of my cases for you to work your magic on because they did come out nice
-
Thank you Deuce, send them over! I was real lucky the cases were in good shape and didnt need welded. I have maybe $20 in refinishing them. The next set I do I will probly have powdered. I used 550f vht engine paint, have used it for years with 0 issues as long as its applied and cured correctly. Im working on doing my own pc,small stuff anyways,on my next build. May end up pulling the trigger on a setup big enough to do frames as pc is redicously expensive here. But that will have to wait till I go back to work. I have a guy that builds drag car chassis that can tig cases if need be.
-
So you said Baldwin did the porting, did they do anything else? Did you send it to Mark Baldwin to go over it after you bought it from Steve?
-
Nice work. That ended up sweet.
-
Thank you etccb! Tbone it was a complete Baldwin built motor that Steve kept the bottom end. It had Baldwin done gears,I couldnt talk him out of it..lol. Im running the cylinder as is,its nikasil plated and just needed a piston and bath. I was running a short rod in my last motor but the way Mark set it up with the spacer and the cr piston I had to use a long rod. I bought a new Hot Rod crank from a place in Iowa for $172 shipped,it is the newer style. The cylinder had a few minor scuffs from the previous piston that I was able to just clean up,it was basically just alumn piston,no gouges or scratches. I really dont think there was much run time on the cylinder. I also bought the Sparks TT off of that quad so everthing should be matched and identical to how Farr had it. I have yet to call Mark for exact details on porting. There was much debate on that partout, and Im not saying it should or shouldnt have been parted out,and Steve and I had a long talk about it. It wasnt a championship quad, and not even sure it was a race quad,I think it was just a play/practice quad. Tim was on a hybrid in 02'. The good thing is the roller went to a good home and I will keep this setup and the history as well. I also know where the white Fullbores went, they are in a good home aswell. I tried to get those too,but a meber here was the lucky one..lol

Sneak peak at the powder, been waiting a month as my pc guy is backed up. Still has to be clear coated over the red but hoping to have it back this afternoon. Was initially going with gold in the lower arms and swinger but decided on just the wheels. More pics in the next couple days when I get it all laid out for assembly. The color is Mirror Red,wheels will be Summerset Gold.

Thank you, that was before the clear coat. Its what my pc guy recommended as the closest thing he's used to Honda red. I will post better pics tomorrow,I just had about 6 cups of coffee when I took those, hahahaha!!
-
Looks awesome man!! I also use mirror red and love it I haven't found one closer to honda red then that. Cant wait to see this thing assembled!
-
Thanks guys!!.. Pc done tomorrow, just getting some small things assembled before tomorrow.

Sneak peak! The powder turned out great!

I think I might visit some trailer parks this weekend, see what I can find.
-
Freaking awesome thread! Plus 2 for the trailer trash aspect lmao
-
Thanks guys!! About 4 years ago I got this LRD Crf from a pig farmer on craigslist. It was serial number 0001,according to Lrd it was built for Ballance brothers as a XC test setup. Frame ended up being sold through another shop and later reassembled by the hired hand of the pig farmer, hence the John Deere theme, and mx'd. I did two quad wars with it then parted it out.
-
Very nice colors man! That thing really pops. Hard to go wrong with red.
-
Thanks Red,I went back and forth on the colors for awhile. Its best to go to your powder coater with atleast a general idea of what you want, otherwise you look at colors for an hour and still dont know what you want!!...hahaha
-
Got alot done today,if I had my rear tires mounted it would be a roller.

-
Good,thank you for checking!
-
Vid works. Bike looks sick. Let's see some more pics.
-
Intake bracket looks good lol. Did you make sure to oil that filter? Looks dry unless the oil has the red dye.
-
Thanks Tbone! Lol,I love that bracket Deuce, and I use No-Toil air filter,it comes out clear. Best stuff IMO. I will have better/more pics tonite when the sun goes down a little, too bright for good pics right now,but its sitting on the ground now!!
-
Not done, but close. Waiting on a few parts and need to make ANOTHER trip to Ace for sway bar bolts. Also an alignment and a few other little things, but it runs!!!

That thing is looking great. Don't scratch your new powder when you rotate that right front.
-
Lol,I was wondering if anyone would catch that!!.. My coater has a tire machine,he installed it backwards,if he scratches it he can recoat it for no charge...LOL For some reason the wheels look darker than what they are,in the sun you can see more of the metallic in them. The color looked alot different under flourecent lighting, but Im still happy!
-
Looks awesome! That sure went together fast. Did you get the ok to go racing next weekend?
-
Thank you! Yeah she went together pretty good, only a few minor issues. I didnt change the mechanical water pump seal and that came back and bit me,new one on order. Other than a bunch of trips to Ace for stainless hardware I had everything ready. It took 4 weeks for powder so I had plenty of time to get ready..lol.. As far as racing goes I almost got her talked into it!!
-
Yeah I will get some,I need to sells some stuff first. I will get a set of the 86' style from Motofool, but not sure if I will use them on this build or not. Im working with designs with another member, but I have to get my butt in gear on this. If nothing else for the time being I will call Andy at Maul Tech for some since I already have the seat cover.
-
Of course,on the 3rd heat cycle the mechanical water pump seal started leaking,it was the only seal I didnt replace. Should've known. New one will be here tomorrow. Got the brakes blead and alignment done yesterday. Started setting up the sway bar, need to make another trip to Ace. Motor sounds really good, shifts through all the gears(lol) and starts easy. Hoping to race it Friday night if all goes well!
-
did you notice the lower rad port curves toward the frame, so does the upper left, im having the same problem.. how did you deal with it? cut/ weld?
-
Yeah I had this radiator in my 86' stock frame as well. The lower one was the only one that caused an issue, upper was fine. All I did was gently pry the outlet towards the motor with a pry bar while it was mounted in place, didnt take much. It fit great after that, fits great in the Laeger as well. I also had to trim the tab on the front side as it rubbed the steering shaft. I only paid $99 shipped for it and the hoses. Hoses fit with some trimming, but I feel that some of the bends werent correct, but they fit. I had to add an inline cooler when I went to the pro-x cylinder as the upper hose wasnt long enough.
This is how it fit in my 86' before:
After bending
(http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz242/04450r/photo_zps0ede9299.jpg)
It fits with more clearance in the Laeger, overall for a cheapy radiator Im happy with it.
-
Looks like its going racing Friday night, eveything is buttoned up,mechanical wp seal is fixed. Have to scale it tomorrow night and put another heat cycle on then double check everything. I will have my buddy try to get some video,it sounds like there will be sime fast quads running so Im not expecting much. Mainly want to make it through the night safely with no damage to me or the quad..lol
-
Good luck man! I think everyone is going to want a vid also!
-
yeah i have the same radiator, i had to cut the tab also but havent thought about the curved ports until now..
the rock guard mounts were a little off center also, but you cant tell on the frame..
-
Thanks Red! Yeah the side mounts were off just a little, very minor bend there. It didnt take much to bend the outlet though, but Im sure a good weld shop would have no problem cutting and welding if you wanted to go that route. Also these radiators are the same size as stock.
-
Test ride went great, really pulls for a little 265! Had to step up the main from a 175 to a 182,I think it would pull a 185. Setup the front end and the sway bar on the ol trusty bathroom scales. At full race weight it comes in at 369lbs. Yeah thats kinda heavy, with different wheels and tires I could shave atleast 10-15. As is it would be a very nice mx setup..lol Honestly setup on the scales went alot better than we thought. Front side to side was within one pound and rear was within 2lbs. Front to rear around 15lbs,not having heavy beadlocks and those hoosiers would've got it alot closer, but I cant complain at all!
-
Looking good. Yes those tri tracs and beadlocks can add up in a hurry. Have fun!!
-
Looking good. 369lbs, damn I wonder what my ride weighs.
-
Thank you! Yeah they sure do,probly pretty close to the weight of Hipers..lol.. I have a set of .125's with rear Hoosiers and front American Racer, plus another set of Razor TT fronts. But the set on it now has the best tread. Rear tire (18/9/10) have a 56" diameter. 13/36 gearing is all I have to play with tonite,if those rear tires dont work out I will have a few other choices as well,in different diameters. Guess we will see tonite, there will be a few fast 4 strokes to compete with. My main goals will be to stay safe and not damage anything too bad. I really only have about 10 minutes seat time on it,in grass and pavement. Getting traction on dirt,on a banked oval, will be a true test. If the track is packed nicely and not to rough the pro-trax will be "ok",I have my stick damper all the way stiff just to slow the steering down some.

Guess we will see tonite, there will be a few fast 4 strokes to compete with. My main goals will be to stay safe and not damage anything too bad. I really only have about 10 minutes seat time on it,in grass and pavement. Getting traction on dirt,on a banked oval, will be a true test. If the track is packed nicely and not to rough the pro-trax will be "ok",I have my stick damper all the way stiff just to slow the steering down some.
please tell me your going have some Go-pro footage for us

No vids, sorry guys but there wasn't much to see. I only got to put about 5 laps on her. Track was super sticky and actually prepped really well for a banked oval stock car track. There were ALOT of bikes there, its Grand National TT weekend in Peoria, there were bikes from all over the US,but only 5 quads. Took it out for practice, ran great but the rears were too grippy. Came in and put some American Racers on,got ready for the heat race. Kick, kick, kick, kick finally starts. Make 1 lap and its popping, cutting out then backfired and blew the head pipe off, made it off the track and into the pits under her own power. Get the head pipe on,pull the plug and find the gap partially closed, along with the coil mount bolts vibrated loose causing a loose ground, sweet, easy fix. New plug, tightened ground and she fires first kick,my buddy makes a few laps in the pits, good to go! Couple hours later its time for the main, kick, kick, kick, kick,NOTHING,WTF!!! Missed the main, pushed it in the trailer and went home, didnt even unload it,I will figure it out tomorrow or Monday. I expected to have a few minor issues since it only had about 10 minutes ride time on it,but I figured it would've made it through the night..lol... Regardless,I had a good time, seen lots of fast bikes and met alot of cool people. I will get this thing figured out and hopefully hit 2 more local races in Sept. Two other local stock car tracks stepped up and offered to hold races this year, very cool thing they are doing to help themselves and us.

This is the one good pic we got,the rest would just be me working on it,lol. Mine and my buddies quads together. His has a 501 Baldwin motor, and is for sale/btw. Next to us is our other buddy,an old national TT quad guy running his bikes,crf450 and an old Chris Carr Rotax bike, very cool bike!

Finally had the time to breeze this build thread, awesome job!!! I can envision a new series on History channel called "Trailer Park Treasures" coming about..
Also, I seriously never thought of corner weighing a quad, aligning yeah, but not corner weighing...What's wrong with me, I'm on it!
Props! great build and 265PV to boot!!!
