Title: CDI's
Post by: The_Steve_Man on August 14, 2014, 10:42:51 AM
I have 3 cdi's, 2 86-7 and an 89. I think I have a bad wiring harness. Can anybody test these out for me?  I can't imagine having 3 bad ones. I will get an 86 harness if they work.

I'll toss this out there.. I believe you just need a multimeter to test.  I think testing the coil requires a peak voltage adapter.

You can't test a cdi with a multimeter. You can test a coil.

Yes you are correct - I was having a brain fart for a minute.  You test the ICM CDI connector with the multimeter but that just tests the coil and pulse generator.  Now after my little detour, back to your question at hand..

first I would say you probably don't have bad wires in your wire harness, but have bad connections in your wire harness...

and they are easy to spot, just take a flash light and shine it through each connector and look for any discoloring or burnt looking spots, like yellow or brown, if you find any sign of heat like this, that is were the issue is...

also don't overlook the plug cap connection, you might want to cut off the very last 1/4 inch of the coil wire to give you a good contact

I am sure it is a bad connector. I have looked and could not find anything. My plug cap is good, I am running it on my bike now. Once I verify they work I will take a better look at the connectors. I tossed it in a box a while back and just put my 85 harness back on.
