Title: Axle Identification

A few Weeks ago I blew a hub while riding the Hatfield McCoy Trail system.  I purchased a set of hubs only to find out they do not fit.  My questions are:

1. How can I tell what brand of axle I have?  It has 25 splines.  (No identifiable markings are visible)

2. What hubs can I run with it?

probably a 400ex axle. They have different splines than a 250r
