Title: Houser YZ426 Hybrid
Post by: Deuce on July 14, 2013, 01:01:01 PM
So I picked up this Houser chassis last week because I always wanted a 426 hybrid.
Back story is I use to have the 2000 yz 426 dirtbike and loved the motor, yes there have since been faster bikes and motors since then, but I always enjoyed it when I had it.  This always left a part of me wanting to have that motor again in a quad chassis.  When my buddy got his yfz I was rather disappointed.  From a chassis perspective I was never comfy on it and felt like I was sitting up too high, and from the motor aspect it felt like it had no balls compared to the 426.
So I've always kicked around the idea and recently I decided I was going to go for it and get myself a 426 hybrid one of these days.  There was that PRP I was watching and going to go for, but this Houser came along and I bit the bullet and bought it.  In the end its going to be more expensive to build this to what I want then starting with a complete bike.  But I know when I am done it will be exactly what I want.

So the seller had it listed as a 250R Houser hybrid and I thought it was so.  After I finally got it home and looked it over I realized it wasnt a 250R houser chassis and was kind of let down.  But it turns out its a hybrid 400ex chassis, and I'm ok with that since the 400ex and 250R share the same geometry, and this will even take 250r plastics so good enough for me.

More about the chassis:  It is I believe an 02 houser 400ex yz426 hybrid chassis.  The chassis is a no link so it keeps in line with all my other R's that are no links as well.  I managed to actually find more info on it and its previous forms after I stumbled across it on google.  The person who I purchased it from must have not been the one who owned it for a while, but none the less its still cool to find previous forms of the bike.  I'm going to do a build thread in the other section on this bike, and it is going to take me some time since I have other projects and will just acquire parts for this either when a deal comes along or when my other projects are finished.  But anyway here are some photos of the bike and its previous form.

Here is pretty much everything I have at the moment:  Frame, Subframe, Swingarm, Axis No-Link rear shock, and airbox

Here is what the bike must have originally looked like.  It was set up for TT when one of the previous owners got it back in the mid 2000's

It was ran that way for a while until he started to change it up

And here is the final form of the bike that I could find pictures of.  Not sure if it has been assembled since this

This is certainly going to be a project, the frame needs a little tlc before powder(mainly because of my OCD), and the quest for the parts I want has begun.  Anyway hopefully this project comes together sooner rather than later because I am excited for it

Today I had the chance to talk to Mark out at Houser some more to see what further info I could dig up on this chassis.

According to Mark, these frames are 250R copies but with some 400ex parts..  The only reason it uses 400ex front end components like the A arms and steering stem is because back in the early 2000's when these were made, the ex components were more readily available and cheaper than the 250R.  The rear end still utilizes the 250R bearing carrier, axle, anti fade, brake caliper and those goods.  So now I finally have the true direction to go with finding parts, and my goal is to find a Gibson 400ex +3 front end for it.

The best part in the end is it will still look and feel like a 250R, just the wrong engine found its way in there.  I wish it was done already...

Yes, she was a great looking bike when she was like that.  I hope to restore her to her old glory, if not make it better.

My good friend John had a Walsh yz426 it was a great ride. The only downfall was the kick starting process,But all you need is a set of auto decomp cams and she will kick over like nothing. Here is a few pics of her not trying to clutter up your thread here.

No worries, I love pics of them all, and that Walsh is a beautiful bike.
I really wanted gibson a arms for this build, but have had no luck finding any so I'm having a set of gull wing a arms custom built.  I hope they turn out looking good.

As for the starting, I use to have the dirtbike and once you know how to start the 426 the right way, there is no need for the auto decompression cams.

yeah I've had 2 426's and I can start them in one kick no problem. I personally wouldn't spend the money on auto decomp. Its all about timing on those. I always pushed the kicker till it stopped, then I would pull lever and barely roll the kicker, and then I would bring kicker back up and kick it and it would start right up.

Yep, that's how its done.  If you can do this the yz 426 is simple to start.

And yeah, I'm going to 444 it.  May even send it to sparks to be ported, they said they would do it during the off season.  Baldwin would be another choice.

Now that I have 2, I have samples of what is good and what needs to be fixed on both, because whats good on one is messed up on the other

What makes you think it would come back with that crf motor in it and not a yz?

Good idea... I think we can work something out

Its just the way its sitting on the ground.  The lower frame pad/roller for the chain actually hangs below the frame on these, and that one they have a wheel on it which makes it sit on an angle even more so than the white one which just has a small triangular block.

Also the swingarm is on the white one with the shock making it sit level, the orange one doesnt have the shock or swingarm... its all an illusion

So are you ever gonna get one of your projects done so you can ride it bud, the more projects you buy the less time you put into the others man. Just messing with yah man, cool to see you have 2 now. That just means you have double the work to do and 4times the money to spend.

Did u ever do anything with these builds. I have bought a hybrid houser 250r/crf450 frame, swinger,no link shock  from chopp124. Haven't done anything with it. Just recently picked up a lsr frame swinger shock and crf engine to building instead. I will tell u looking at both frames the houser seems to be built a lot better.am now considering selling the houser.

Sorry I never responded sooner... kinda have been out of the game.

As for my two Houser chassis, they are both out at HRE right now getting things fixed or changed.  One is staying as a 426, and the other is being converted to the 03-05 yz 450 motor.  Both chassis seemed to have issues, because previous owners either broke or changed something, so what was good on one frame seemed to be bad on another, so Mike has both as a template to return both back to the way they should be besides the adaption for the motors, and removable headstays.

Other than that I have also debated on selling everything from the hybrids and all my bikes off and just get out of atv's all together, but that's another story.

As to my recommendation scar, I prefer the houser chassis to the lonestar.  The problems with the lonestar chassis is that they all have the same problems with cracking in the typical spots regardless if its a 250r or hybrid (seen both types crack in the same spots).  I'd personally keep the Houser over the Lonestar, but thats just my opinion due to wanting something that will last.  Both companies are still around and will help you out with them as well (have to hunt down Mark at Houser though since he was with them when they were doing the hybrids)

Ya I called lsr for some Parts  this past week and didn't get far. need spacers between swinger and engine and was told that He was unsure He could even get them anymore. Kind of frustrated. Houser is nicer but requires all 400ex components which I have none of. Lsr chassis isn't as nice but requires all 250r stuff which I have.these r $$$$$$
