Title: My Backwoods Beater rebuild
Post by: Trusty2stroke on October 29, 2014, 01:10:39 AM
Decided to pull the plug on riding season and tear down the bike for its long overdue revamp. I purchased the bike in early March and had been in storage for some years prior to me buying it. There have been LOTS of very hard hours logged on this thing since march and honestly I dont know how its still in one piece and running LOL! Compression is very low, motor rattles like a bucket of bolts, frame is rough, and suspension wore out along with everything else.  As of right now the plan is to fix the frame issues: powder, replace all bushings/bearings/seals, freshen up the engine, rebuild rear shock, new/used front shocks, wheels/tires, update a few things, and anything else that needs to be replaced. Here is what it looks like before tear down.

Probably the most beaten Arens frame ever!

Wow I didn't even know it was possible to crack an Arens frame like that! Lol

Are you gonna send it to someone to fix up?

Post by: Trusty2stroke on October 29, 2014, 10:32:42 AM
Neither did I LOL. Funny part is the reason I bought this bike is because I didnt wanna deal with any cracked oem frames, kinda ironic haha.  Probably gonna take it to a local Fabrication place to do all the welding.

Ouch, proly should have tore it down when you got it. A little weld here and there should fix you up!

Im not sure if the frame was this bad when I bought it. There was some serious riding time put on this thing over the past few months. some of it may have been from me haha

Yea those Arens are tough as nails but when the suspension isn't up to par the frame is going to take way more stress...

You say you're getting new wheels, what's the gameplan with those beadlocks?

Finally have made some progress. Got the frame back from powder but still waiting on the bolts to get done from nickel plating. I still havent decided if im going to stick with my stock width laegers arms or go to +2 arms with a set of 4-1 wheels. Starting to get somewhere with this thing! picked up some silver maiers, laegers +2+1 arms, 05 450r brakes/spindles/hubs, paul turner type 6, axis fronts shocks, tag fat bars, alba nerfs, alba brake line clamps, and some billet pieces. The motor is at the shop now getting a facelift also. Need to send the rear shock to maultech sometime next week to wrap up the rear end. The only missing pieces are new wheels, front tires, IMS clear tank, and a few other misc. parts. The only wheels I have at the moment are its sand shoes which only get used once a year but im diggin the dune look even though its a XC machine.

What is that under your fenders near the radiator?  Is it an extra spark plug holder?  Looks cool either way

This was supposed to be a just a refresh with just the basics lol...the wallet it fried now haha. Thats is my extra plug holder under the fender bracket, fits and works great! Motor is a copy of the ported stock cylinder with 300 sleve similar to the balance set up, except it will be on pump gas.

LOL... I havent fouled a plug with this bike but everyone I ride with is on 2 smokers aswell so you can never have too many and I kinda play the role of Rescue bike that has all the tools/spare parts haha.. Unfortunately I have no idea who made this one though, it was on the bike when I purchased it.

More progress! Its getting very close, hoping its done for memorial weekend. Got the engine back, tank, nerfs mounted, rear end is all back together, and all sorts of miscellaneous stuff done. Finally got my new esr flange so i can mount my pipe and try to start this thing haha. Im still needing wheels/tires and front brake lines, then its ride time to see what falls off lol. I will push it out in the sun today for better pics.

Well here it is on all 4 wheels! Trying to take it easy on the break in but its hard to hold back haha. Still need to finish adjusting camber/toe in, shock resi clamps, front brake lines, and figure out a graphics situation.

put some more time on it today, sure does feel a heck of alot different than before. It takes alot more steering input to get this thing to turn, or its just pushing the front end. How do you Xc guys like your camber/toe setupts?
