Title: Hatfield McCoy Trip Halloween 2014
Post by: Tbone07 on November 05, 2014, 09:13:55 AM
Made my first trip out to Hatfield this Halloween weekend. It was decent weather on Thursday, but rainy and cold on Friday and Saturday. So much on Saturday that nobody in our group even rode.

There was standing water all over the place, which means on a quad I got soaked to the bone after the first 15 minutes. The guys on bikes and in the UTV's (i really really want one BTW), were almost completely dry. I'm not going again when it's wet unless I have a bike or UTV, or i'll go during the summer/spring.

The R ran really good besides having an open airbox and most likely letting water in. Though if it did, I couldn't tell. I'm in love with the "luggability" of this LED 350 motor. I still ride like i'm riding my CRF450 and always find myself in the wrong gear on the 2-stroke. Regardless this thing just chugs up the hill like it's nothing. It would be interesting to see how much a stroker crank would improve on that.

Extremely impressed with the way the Ecoboost pulled the 2 RZR's BTW.....and i'm a die-hard GM guy

Yep. Most of the pics are from Bear Wallow, couple are from Buffalo Mountain

It is a really fun time, I would have more fun if it wasn't for the weather.

Did you stay in a hotel or cabin?

We stayed in Man, WV at a hotel and rode the quads to Rockhouse the first day and then drove to Bearwallow for the second.  It was only a 25 minute drive.

I have been wanting to go there. I only have sport quads. So was there good trails.  I was under the impression it was real rocky more for utility quads. Did u run 20" rears and 22" fronts?

Some trails are smooth and others can be very rocky.  It is a good mix of everything.  I would recommend a good tuned suspension though.  I could not image running an R's stock suspension there.

Rocks really weren't an issue overall. I've got skid plates front and rear so I wasn't too scared. Don't get me wrong there were some rocks the size of cinder blocks, but they weren't anything you couldn't avoid

All the trails I rode were pretty awesome. If there wasn't so much standing water I would have had a blast. A quad just splashes so much water back at you, it's unavoidable. I think a utility quad would be a huge turd on those trails, no offense to the utility crowd. The different trail heads offer different obstacles to some degree

21" fronts and 20" rears

Yep they are the exact same thing, just called X-Rex. GBC had to change the name

I really like them so far. There was definitely the potential for some sidewall gashing at Hatfield with all the rocks, but all 4 of mine are still holding air with no other issues

Which one of those three did you guys like the best? and do you think you can start at one trail head and ride to the other to get more gas? I go through fuel like crazy in big hills and mountains so I have wondered if I could start at one and make it to the other to fill back up, carrying the oil would be easy.

This is a couple hours away, when we covered it quicker than we thought we would we almost headed east to HM, if you don't like people this is your place because we saw exactly one quad and no people the whole time there. It's not really well maintained or well marked and some of it is fairly rough, mainly the southern part had some real rocky sections, but it was a good time. The worst part about it is finding someplace to stay, it's not close to anything civilized.

Looks like a blast.  About the tires. I'm running the new name masters and I have to say the same. They pull quite well. I was thoroughly impressed on a muddy MX track as they hooked up and got me where I needed to be quickly. Great price.

Back to the ride. Nice pics and it's always good to hear of no issues. I really like those seat graphics as well.
