Is this a worn clutch basket or something? Listen to how the noise changes when the clutch is pulled in. Thanx

sounds normal to be...i could be wrong.  when my counter-balancer was going bad it sounded like it was being hit with a hammer.

I don't remember that noise last yr. I run high comp so maybe it's causing that noise. Just odd how it goes away when clutch is pulled in.

Pull your counterbalancer out it needs a rebuild.  Neil @ c-leigh racing does it for $50.  Price includes bearing.  But when you do that replace the bearing on the stator side as well.    I think that is $12 from honda but I could be wrong.

All I can say is do not start your bike again.  I watched ball bearings shoot through the front cases when my buddies bike was making that same noise.

Thanx for the advice. Just was throwing me for a loop cause you pull the clutch in and the sound disappears or when the base fully heats up it will quiet down.

Are you running a Hinson basket on a 86? If so, the small gear on the crank may be touching the back side of the basket.

No don't have a Hinson basket. Just got done taking the balancer out and all bearings are good on the balancer.Thought for sure that was prob. Made another discovery though that stator side crank bearing has up and down play so either case is shot or bearing. I can't figure this out these bearings are 8 roller and only have 2 summers on them and hotrods short rod crank. Been running benoil 32/1 on aviation fuel. Would high comp take out the crank bearing that quick? Shoulda lasted a lot longer then this I would think. Crank bearing play cause that noise? Thanx

Sounds normal. Some call it piston slap. Some say its the water pump bearing. It really does not change much when you pull the clutch in. Mine are louder then that after a complete rebuild. Its all good!

If your crank has play up and down then you need to worry about that. The mains may blow out on the next ride. Yes it could be worn case where bearing presses in.

I just finished testing him the same thing Puma.  I actually had the same thing happen on my motor when I first got it.  I could grab the flywheel and move the crank up and down.  Figured it was bearings, however after disassembly I found the bearings appeared to be good.  I could however drop the bearing in and out of the cases.  Ended up replaces both case halves.

I can see a few things causing this issue such as detonation hammering on the bearings.  Or even bearings going bad which causes them to beat the cases.  Improper installation or extraction of the bearings or multiple rebuilds just wearing out the bearings.

Thanx for the reply guys. This started thinking i was one thing and ended up finding another prob lol. Bearings were all new like I stated 2 summers ago. Motor runs solid only thing I was questioning was that noise power is real good. Only thing I could think of that might of done it was when I seized it up doing down blacktop about 2 Wks after rebuild with a esr pump gas setup. Betting when it seized up and skidded it mighta spun a bearing in the case. Got another 86 base I could through in there and put my topend on. Just gonna miss the 89 gear setup that was in this one. Anybody got any good recommendations on how to touch up chipped black paint on an engine base. Something that blends good and lasts. Thanx

I thought it was normal to until it just seemed to me it was getting alil diff sound to it. So that caused me to investigate and then I found the crank play. I think the play has been there for abit but I got another 86 base I can put on for peace of mind. Been afew yrs but I think I liked the 87-89 gearing better. Can't remember how big a diff there actually was. Thanx
