Im not sure if any of you have checked out TroyBilt's airbox/intake boot designs but they are looking amazing. The flow increases he is showing with a flow bench are astounding. I asked him about a 250R design and he had mentioned that there didnt seem to be enough interest. So I was hoping that maybe he was misinformed.
We need a better high flowing intake and airbox option. I know i would want one for my XC bike for sure. My MX bike would require a different boot due to the cr 500 linkage.
Getting rid of the restrictive rubber boot would be amazing, i think it would also making mounting carbs easier, as you would be able to force them onto the carb from the airbox side instead of having the rubber boot just collapse.
So who all would be interested in a new airbox/boot. I imagine its going to cost something. Im sure more than $200, so keep that in mind if you say that you want one.
Lets make this a reality for the 250r brethren.
-
I would most definitely be interested in one for my Laeger no-link. My air-box setup is terrible
-
Im assuiming he would start by building one for an OEM frame/suspension setup.
-
I would definitely be interested in one as long as it is easier to put the carb on instead of more difficult.
-
We will need at least 15 confirmed id say to make Robl Engineering interested.
-
Kyle, you should post some of the pics that he has done for the 450s. I looked at a couple of the pics. They looked good.
-
Ill buy one as long as its not harder to squeeze my 40.5 pwk in
-
Second thought, ill take one even if its hard to get the carb on lol
-
He has a Face book page, with flow bench numbers/video. Check it out.
-
I'm in if it fits cr5 linkage.
-
bump it up... Search Robl Engineering on facebook.
-
Troy says he has started working on one that will fit the OEM and CR500 frames.
-
Wish someone closer to him could get him a lobo chassis to make one for it! I know a few roll owners would be all over them.
-
I'm very interested for one on my stock frame. I would imagine the big issue with producing something like that for us is there's just so many different combinations of frames, carbs, and cylinders so i don't know if one universal setup would work for everyone. Obviously the no links would have to be different. I would be willing to make something work.. Nothing else that I've put on my quad has been a direct bolt on so I wouldn't be too sad if It didn't fit perfect. I've been having a lot of issues getting my smartcarb mounted up perfect lately.

Can you guys get me a measurement for the inside diameter of the bell housing (intake side) on your carbs and Smart carbs? Not the outer diameter, I need the intake to match inside so the transition is minimized. I'll get UPP to make an adaptor boot to go from the intake tube to the carb. Right now I don't have a carb to use. The intake design is mostly done. I'm going to borrow Dan's airbox to get a box drawn up.

I will measure my 38mm SC tonight and let you know. Thanks Troy. I'm sure others will chime in with different carb types and sizes.
-
Troy, my 38mm SC measured 56.6mm ID.
-
By the way the intake will use a UNI filter. I'm working directly with UNI on a larger opening filter that will fit inside the stock/new airbox, absolute must on big bores. I prefer UNI's filters, I've order some No-Toil filters as well as I've heard good things about those too. A 4.5" ID KN will fit as well, if you have a hard on for K&N filters...
-
Here is a few renderings, I haven't started on the box yet. Stay tuned.
-
Not sure why IMG code doesn't work?? from photobucket, so I uploaded them.
-
Looking pretty awesome so far, Troy! I am good with Uni filters as well. All I ask on the box is that you either make the lid opening around the same size as OEM so we can use an outerwear lid replacement OR incorporate something that will deter mud from being able to get on the filter.
-
That looks awesome Troy.
Being able to seal up the airbox is the most important thing for me
-
Don't worry I've got some tricks up my sleeve I'm going to do on this box, unlike anything I've done before. It will be XC mud worthy, promise...
-
Hey Troy, you need a guinea pig to test it?!!! I'm game! LOL
-
if you have time, can you explain a bit what the last pic that is showing flow characteristics is indicating? and what that means for flow benefit?

I like the sound of that. I hope it works on a no-link lol.
BTW i'll be sending you the no-link pictures shortly.

Just looking for if there is any Eddies or deadspots. There is part of the screen that I didn't capture with that pic that shows the actual velocity of various distances from the end... but its basically irrelevant since I'm making assumptions for the pressure drop across the intake, long story short its slightly more than a pretty picture... lol. At some point, I want to use my SoMat and actually measure the pressures along the intake track.
-
So the above image is a high flow clamp on tube to the carb? If so I'm down for that on a CR500 link
-
Troy, would a CF airbox use the oem carb to airbox boot? Id imagine you couldnt install a CF boot with a airbox...
-
Looks sweet Troy.
