Post by: tlr7272 on November 21, 2014, 10:37:41 AM
Im strating on my first real total build , i pikd up an 86 which was actually worse off then i thjought.. I traded my gsxr1000 for it cuz im yired of cops on the steets... But bak to quad i completly tore it apart down to frame the motor actayully ran really well so im thinking about justkeeping motor as is just adding electronics , like dyna cdi box, ignitiuon advancer, v-force reeds  and thats where the problem im havin is ii want to use the the v force 3 with torque spacer is there a difference in v-forces 3s  i was gonna buy one off eay and guy said i couldnt use spacer with it ???? So idk im just trying to build the best woods quad i can with 5,000$ budget ..... Anyone have any ideas ???? Cuz i need them i  havew riden and raced eeverthing my whoile life but it was always built for me...... Thanks greenhorn

A spacer won't change much. It really comes down to how much space you end up with down there. If you go to big bore then the spacers start to get in the way. Most go with a bigger carb 38mm-39mm. When you go to the bigger carb you then have to watch out for the inlet and outlet size of carb to intake manifold. Figure out what you want /need before buying.

welcome. if you are going to stick to stock ign, just use the stock cdi, dont waste money on a aftermarket cdi box. if you want to upgrade the electronics, pick up a 02-07 cr250 ign system. the best ignitions are the 01 cr ignitions but they dont make the parts anymore for them, so the prices are ridiculous, and the 02-07 work the same. however, the cr ignition has a lighter flywheel so your riding skill level will determine if you can deal that in the woods.
there is vforce3 reed blocks for the trx250r, it is model #v305b. if you want to go with those, just buy the correct one for the trx250r, dont worry about the 'torque' spacer, not needed at all, doesnt add 'torque' lol.
what pipe does ur bike have? what carb? if these are all stock, this is the first way to free up the detuned motors potential before digging inside. let us know what u have and we can go from there

Get a 350 kit but not the bolt-on. Get your cases machined to accept the 350cc cylinder sleeve. This is much more reliable

Get the TRX5B pipe for the bigger cylinder.

For woods riding, get a 38mm Air Stryker or PWK carb

Use a good working OEM ignition and flywheel for the woods.....or if you can get your hands on a flywheel wright for the CR ignition, then go that route.

There are a lot of bolt on 330 out there. If you flat don't want to split your cases to have them bored for the larger sleeve the bolt on is a good way to make your ride a lot better for your use then work done to the oem cyl. If splitting your cases get the normal cyl and send your case 1/2's to esr and they will mod the case for free if you buy a cyl kit from them. That is the best way to go but there are a lot that don't want to split the cases and that is why there is a bolt on 330 kit.

Get the ESR 350. You can look up all the prices on ESR's website. They will even bore your cases for free of you buy a certain engine kit

The VForce 3 will work on the 350cc ESR cylinder

yes cr ignition is light years different and better than the 30 year old technology in the stock trx ignition, i dont have time to go into it now but im sure someone here can :)
in terms of cylinder work if you dont want to split cases (u must strip them to bare cases to have them bored for 330 cyl and bigger, and it is daunting for some people, especially if you have never done it before), just send ur stock jug to a trusted and reliable builder and have them port it accordingly, then pick up a trx5 pipe and a 38mm keihin carb with some vforce's. IMO i would go with an oem properly ported and setup top end, then a bolt on 310 which is actually only 295.

first thing i would do is put some feelers out to builders, tell them ur plans and see which you feel most comfortable with.

a 350 will run circles around a piped 450, but don't tell them that. contact esr to get the run down on every thing u need to do before sending him cases, or u can just take a road trip and pick this up and be done with it :)

In all honesty with your budget you mentioned, you should be able to find a nicely built R that suits your needs. You may have change a few parts or revalve shocks but in the long run you'll probably come out on top. I'm all down for another project quad. We all enjoy watching a build and helping out. Just an option.
