I was riding at my local OHV park and doing some hill climbs with a buddy. He rides a Banshee so obviously I had a point to prove with my stock engine R with bolt on's. He stalled mid hill and I was coming up fast. I stomped my shifter to down shift and it slipped on the splines. I made the mid hill pass and hit the top feeling 10 feet tall, my R on the other hand had a shifter pointing at the dirt!
I hit my truck to survey the damage and found all the abusers that rode my 86 since it was new plus me helped smooth the inside of the lever. I visited the onsite store to see what they had and found a 81 cr250 shifter that looked close.
The 81 shifter is about 1/2 inch shorter and is about 1/4 inch farther away from the stator cover. It works great and puts the shifter in a location I like better than stock.

That's good to know if you need a shifter in a pinch!

Next time you go ride Carnegie send me a message on here and I will come out and ride if I'm available.
Which hill were you on.

That's funny you knew just where I was :)
I will drop a line next time I go out there. I couldn't tell you the hill I was on but on my way back I got stuck at the fence above the hill climb course. It wasn't a very tricky hill but my buddy hit a rock or something and it kicked his feet off the pegs so in his moment of weakness I went for the pass!
Our 2 stroke quads get some funny looks when we meet bikes on the single track trails.
