ok I am lost. Just got this 88 trx 250r and it rand good when I went and test drove it but when I got it back to my place all of a sudden I can't get it to run right for anything. The guy I got it from said he was running 50:1 for gas I didn't feel safe at that number so I switched it to 40:1. I dunno if that is what is making it run like crap or not but any ways it idles fine but if I gradually give it gas up to about half throttle it seems like it is Ritch. Smokes alot and won't clear it self out. Pulled needle on carb he had it on the very top notch. I moved it down to the third notch down. Didn't help the problem any tho. Carb has a 168 main and 48 pilot. Should I put needle back to top notch. I'm lost. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

When you get to the end of the clip position it is recommended to go to the next jet size instead of leaving it there. You moved the clip down which is gonna make it richer. You proly want to go to a 45 or 42 pilot to lean her up. Do make sure your pilot jet is clean. A clogged pilot jet will make your bike run way too rich.

what size carb .

Pumashine , Tony he said it idles fine, but it's around half throttle it clogs up. Wouldn't he want to go down a main size and start with his needle clip near the bottom?

Is the choke on

what is the motor mods?
-
ok thanx guys. The motor it self I'm not really sure what has been done really other then it being a pro x cylinder and is 310. It does seem to be extremely rich and no me moving the clip down I'm sure just made it richer. The weird thing is it ran great when I went to test drive it and that's why it was an easy purchase. It has a pj 38mm carb. All I did was switch gas and now it runs terrible. It does idle great tho so I think the pilot is fine.

Also has fmf gold series fatty pip and power core 2 silencer.
-
Would going from 50:1 to 40:1 make that big a difference in the jetting.
-
Ugh 50 degree weather here this weekend and I won't be able to ride her the way it is. Lol. Going to try to locate sum kehien jets here today.
-
Are you using the same brand of oil just a different ratio? Alot of us use 32:1 Some 310's are set for 110 race gas most others are set for 100 or a mix of race gas and premium.
-
Using same oil he was using he gave me a quart to get by till I could get sum. And he always ran pump gas 93 octane he swears I had to have gotten bad gas or somthing cuz it was running fine when I was there. But idk. I don't think I got bad gas. I was thinking about mixing race gas and premium 50/50. But he said it wouldn't help in this bike and could make it run worse. Idk

Yes, it could be a little of the main as a 168 is rich for an FMF. Should proly be around 162. Thanks for posting the carb tip thread link Collin. If he reads through there are other things like clogged air filter for example that can cause this. The fact that the previous ower had the clip position at the top was to get her to lean out. This might be pointing towards another problem or needing a different needle. But he was saying this happened all of a sudden.
-
And like I said idles great but I can slowly Rev the engine from idle to half and the whole time from idle to half it smokes alot and just the sound of it sounds way to rich to me it won't clear itself even if I go full throttle. Then when let off gas it will want to die if I don't help it sum. Then it will idle again fine. I pull the plug after doing that and it's not really black but it's wet with fuel.
-

So very untrue. Cannot be worse. Could be it was set for pump gas. But always use clear premium. Even if you used straight race gas it could do no harm.
-
Cutback on the fuel to it. Go down to middle clip on needle and start going down jet sizes one at a time.
Go through normal check up stuff such as cleaning air filter, checking wire connections, grounds, reeds, and make sure all carb boots are on tight!
-
Really does sound like your stator is going out. Can run at idle but does not have a powerful enough spark to run full throttle. I hope you have put a new plug in.
-
I switched from 40:1 to 36:1 & had to lean my carb a little when I made the change.
-
Ok thanx guys going to try to locate sum jets today and see what I can do
-
Yes new plug and clean uni filter.
