Title: Recommend a quiet silencer for my Sparks MX pipe
Post by: Jimbo45 on March 05, 2015, 03:05:14 PM
My sparks silencer is more than then years old.  I know I could repack it, but IT IS LOUD.  I really want a quiter silencer, that I can add a spark arrestor to, if needed down the road.  Any recommendations on a quieter silencer that I can add a spark arrestor too, that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, that will work with the Curtis Sparks MX pipe?

I wonder how these compare, dB wise, to say, a Cascade silencer?

I've heard  that the Cascade is quieter. I forget who all owns one. Pumashine and or some of the Mich guys should know. We don't have to deal with that issue here in Okla.  Pro Circuit makes one also BTW, but I'm pretty sure that the Cascade is sup to be the most quiet one that is spark arrested.

Well, I had a Cascade ordered this afternoon, but realized you need to have the stinger bent and welded to the canister, for your application.  That is not in my realm of capabilities.  Ordered cancelled. :(

So, anyone know if the FMF turbine core2 will bolt right up to a Sparks MX pipe???????

...on another note, it seems I may have a big bore Curtis Sparks MX pipe....the O.D. of the end of the head pipe, where the stinger fits over, on mine is 1.130".  It seems the standard bore Sparks pipes are 1.115", from what I have read.  Maybe I need a new head pipe altogether, since mine is not a  BB, and only 269cc.  Dang, this is a mess.....

Standard pipes are 1" ID or 1.125 OD. Big bore are 1 1/8" ID or 1.250 OD. Your best bet is to use the Cascade silencer with the sparks stinger. The cascade comes with a flange. You would have to cut the sparks stinger and weld the cascade flange to it.

Sounds like I have a sparks big bore system.  Maybe that is why the powerband hits so hard.  Maybe I need to look for a different system all together....

I got the fmf spark arrested q-silencer with a trx5 pipe & it's 95db. I heard the cascades are quieter though & flow a little better than the fmf. One thing about the q-silencer is it's long & I had to shorten the stinger so it didn't stick out past the grab bar & look gay.

That is standard. A big bore would measure 1.250" on the OD

Ok, so does anyone know, or have an educated guess........would an FMF Turbinecore2 silencer bolt up to this Sparks MX pipe?  I do have a silicone clamp coupler thing I could use, if it wasn't perfect......

When I was trying out a sparks MX pipe, I am pretty sure I had it bolted up to my turbine core 2 silencer.  I agree with you, that sparks silencer is LOUD!!  I run TRX5 pipes now and I don't even run the ESR silencer with them..Just too loud for my liking.  I know the turbine core is not the quietest thing around, but it is a lot quieter than most silencers...

I sent my trx5b pipe and turbine core 2 Q to Jerry Hall last year.  He did some dyno testing with it.  From what I remember of the Q silencer is that it lost like 2 or 3 horsepower compared to the super loud ESR silencer.  I swap back and forth between the Q and a standard FMF with a spark arrestor bolted on to the back.  If I don't get sound checked, I run the standard.  I can feel a difference on my 330 but not so much on my 310.  But the porting is way different between the 2 machines...

My new Turbinecore2 came today, it arrived at my house fedex in less than 24 hours from when I ordered!  Wow!  I hope to get it put on Monday, and see how it works.  Thanks for the help guys.
