So I sent my crank to a local shop that's a good size and has a pretty good reputation around the state for motor cycles to have my crank re built with a new pro x rod. Pretty simple as far as I'm concerned I suppose. So I get the call saying hey we can't get the crank apart, sorry can't replace that rod for you. But what we did was stop before we wrecked your crank... OK great I say to my self .. so I pick the thing up today and look at it and all the tinning is bent up with flat spots on the tin. When you look at it from the side you can see gaps where the tin is seperating away from the crank due to what ever process they used to attempt to repair my crank. So my question gents is........ is this thing now a paper weight? Or do I have to pay some one to straighten this thing out? Is it even possible? Its kinda hard to tell in the pictures how beat up it is. But it may be enough for you guys to give an opinion...hope the pics work. If not I'll try and up load from my computer ..
edit : a couple more pics are up... but the verdict seems to be junk it eh...
Thanks!

Looks like I'll have to upload the rest from the computer.. stay tuned

The two crank halves do not look parallel any more or is it just the picture?
imo its junk unless you have the tins tig welded all the way around or remove the tins all together crankworks can probably weld it up but a hot rod crank would just be cheaper
-
Junk it.
When I had my crank rebuilt, I sent it to Crank Works in AZ and had them rebuild it with a Pro-X rod. Been a few years now with no problems.
-
negative rss, those are def not parallel ... looks like im spending more money! seems as though its going to be years before this motor gets running again! its been on my work bench for so long its starting to get a thin layer of dust, but lesson learned dont trust my shop and send it out to a known proffesional
-
honestly a hotrod crank is about what it would have cost to rebuild that crank, unfortunately now you probably have a new rod that needs a home
-
Shop around,I got my Hot Rod crank for $172 shipped. Well worth the investment, thats a shame they messed up an oem crank. Did the reinburse you in any way?
-
My local shop wont mess with cranks that have that thin layer of tin on them specifically because of this reason.
What year crank is it? I've got a ton of extras, some probably useable as is, I know I have an 86 Crank I removed last week with rust on the little end of the rod. If it helps pay shipping you can have it.

Looks like the stator side journal is spun also. Was the bearing loose on it?
Agree with the rest.....junk it. Or send it to me. :playful: I've been looking for a couple cranks to experiment with in my mill. (Attempt stroking myself)
-
I know plenty of shops that do not have a problem pulling the OEM crank apart and put in a new rod that lasts as long as expected. Sorry you got screwed over. Take a member up on his offer and pay shipping.

Everybody, meet my cousin Jon.
Did I tell him where to take it? Yes
Did he listen? No
;-)

that shop sounds like a bunch of jokers. should of told you they couldnt do it before they attempted it. really they should pay for a new crank. they knew they couldnt do it but tried any way. epic fail

Thank you Jesse for the intro! Polonda the stator side bearing was on its way out as far as play within the bearing its self.
But it sat tightly in the cases and on the crank as well so I'm not sure if that was damage from a rebuild before I got my grubby hands on the machine. Tyler... that was a 88 crank. Ill pm you and we can work some thing out. Thanks for the help guys this forum is full of great people!
