Has anyone been successful in stripping chrome? If so what did you use?
-
Nitric acid
-
Where do I get that at?
-
I just took a clutch cover to my chrome guy to remove some old chrome, he said the best way is to reverse the chrome process.
-
Take it to a chrome shop. Do you want to replate it or just want the 'bare" look?
-
I just want to strip it so I can PC it.
-
I stripped chrome off a clothes rack with a cattle prod once. Don't know if it would work on quality chrome though.
-
Sandblast it and powder away then.
-
nitric acid dont strip chrome. It eats the nickel off but dont use nitric if it's metal or you wont have anything left the metal will be GONE!!!.. I use reverse current on my rectifier to get the chrome off. only use nitric when stripping nickel off aluminum. strip the chrome off with hydrochrolic acid.(muractic acid) lt'll take the chrome off not the nickel. we use a product BM-10 for the nickel it only eats nickel off everything metal Brass, copper, aluminum ETC. don't know if you can get that product if not your best bet is blasting it. AGAIN DONT PUT METAL IN NITRIC ACID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have used hydroclorlic acid to strip flash chrome and it worked well.use extreme caution if you use it. muractic acid is a fraction of the strength of hydrocloric.

Sand blasting does not remove chrome. Chrome is one of the hardest materials there is. Even the professional sand blaster I use says he can't get it off.

You don't have to remove it. The purpose of blasting the chrome is to roughen it up so the powder has something to adhere to, then you just powder right over it. The guy I have do all my powder coating does the same thing, blast and powder, no reason to remove the chrome. He says he has done this a lot (powders a lot of chrome off of Harley's) and has never had one part with an issue.

I want to know how to remove chrome not how to apply powder to blasted chrome.
-
Other than sanding it off the only way known is the chrome stripper used by the chrome shops.
-
hydrochloric acid will eat chrome off steel and iron. do not put aluminum in hydrochloric. it will leave nothing behind
hydrocholric it will not touch the nickel. the nickel will have to be ground off or electro stripped
best regards

OK cool. I'd think the nickel is soft enough to be sand blasted off. I'll give that a try
