I just switched out my base to this 86 base everything went well when first started up no noise. Then a couple minutes into running it started with this what sounds to be flywheel noise. Seems to be quieting down but still there. If I take flywheel off and put back on the noise is gone for about 30 sec or so then it comes back. Sounds like it rubbing somewhere but have checked everything over. Seems like you rev it up it goes away dunno. Went from one noise now to this noise. Lol (bearings are good no slop)

Another one....

The pistons not tapping the dome is it? Did you check your squish with some solder?
-
Yeah squish good little less then .040 . I know it sounds weird but I think it's some how linked to flywheel it never gave me any trouble on old setup. But you take it off reinstall goes away for abit. The sound is coming from there too. Was gonna swap out keyway but I can't get it off this crank. Any tricks to that? Thanx polanda (only seems to make noise at idle) I can't catch a break on engine noises lol
-
maybe a loose magnet on your flywheel???
john
-
Yeah I was thinking same possibly. Not other flywheel to try though. Just didn't seem to make that noise before attest I didn't hear it. Put stator cover on you can't hardly hear it. Anyone got a 01 stator? Thanx
-
I'm not sure I'm hearing the sound you are talking about. So, just a guess, did you check the clearance between the sensor and raised pulse trigger on the flywheel?
-
Did the flywheel get dropped? Check the distance between the pickup and flywheel tab. Do you have a stock ignition setup to try?
-
No I sold the stock setup. Might still have one but I don't think so. I've already checked pulse trigger and raised it to make sure it's clearing the flywheel. Flywheel wasn't dropped that I'm aware of. I just got done running I said the heck with it. After running it for just alil bit the noise stopped go figure. When fully warmed up it was quiet as a church mouse lol. I'll try it in the mourning and post back. Only does it at idle when could or seems to. Could be flywheel I'm thinking cause it goes away when warm. On a positive note this base is quieter then my other one that had a case to bearing issue. The 6th gear def taller in this 86 case allows for some serious top end on the ole lrd 310. Used to rev 6th out quick. The 5th gear feels about the same to me. Thanx guys
-
Not related but who makes that case saver?
-
eBay I found it. My last name starts with a R too so it fit well. Lol
-
Nice! My first name starts with a R. I'll keep hunting....thanks again.
-
Just got done riding again noise was there cold when idle was low but if you idle up noise goes and it seems to be gone fully warmed up. I think it also might be something todo with when you idle cr ignition down low. Or it's a bad flywheel but don't have another to try. If flywheel was bad would it be noisey at upper rpm's too? Thanx

Take the flywheel off and shake it hard and then twist it by hand rotating directions hard to see if you can hear loose magnets.
-
Yeah tried that cant hear nothing but noise def coming from that area I'm sure of that but flywheel sounds solid.
-
Did you check out the new bottom end? Could be something in the gearbox, basket, etc. Could also be counter balancer or bearing. I would pull covers and inspect.
Can you hear it if you manually turn the motor over? Pull the plug and turn the flywheel or press the kicker. See if you can hear it.

get an automotive stethoscope they really help pinpoint the noise location
-
I'll try some of them tips. Thanx. I can def hear it come from flywheel or pulse generator. It's funky if its warm its gone or if you rev up just alil it disappears. Confused
-
My thought was the Hinson basket hitting the primary gear on the crank. Sound is being transferred throu the crank to the fly wheel area...?
-
Take a long screwdriver and put it on different areas of the motor and put you ear to the handle to pinpoint the problem area. That works just like a stethoscope. You might also want to check for play in your counterbalancer bearing on that side. Just a few suggestions..
-
When I get home tonight ill check it out some more like the screw driver trick. Thanx. Checked counter balancer all bearing spun good ill check with stethoscope though. I'm also gonna try polanda's suggestion of rolling it over no plug and try to pinpoint noise. Hard to trace because it comes and goes. Anyone with a cr ignition got any suggestion it sounds like pulser when idled low on ignition.
-
Just got home and tried the stethoscope all the noise is generated at the pulse generator. Took flywheel off again nothing loose wiggling it around. It sounds like the pulse is arcing out something I'm gonna clean that n flywheel up with some Emory cloth n try again. No arc marks on anything but it sounds like that. I'll post back. Also turned motor over no plug in its quiet no obvious noise.
