Title: 87' R project
Post by: Tador on April 23, 2015, 09:22:43 AM
Hey guys. I've had so many irons in the fire I've been kind of slacking on doing the interwebs thing. So now that I'm on the home stretch with this project, and things have settled down a little, I figured I'd throw up a build thread for some pics. We all love pics, pics are the best.

I bought a fairly good running R, but it was just riddled with hacked cob jobs and worn out components. So, rather than nickle and diming it, I finally said to heck with it and stripped it down to the frame. Enjoy!

It's giving me an image upload error, is there a minimum file size?

just upload image at free image hosting site like imagebam or photobucket, then embed it works good that way :)

Alright, I'll have to do it at a later date then; my work "blocks" image hosting websites for some strange reason... yet YouTube and Facebook are ok, go figure. Thanks!

Skipping forward a bit, I found a bunch more issues...  this was a cool discovery.

Carrier hamburger!

This is the point I decided it wasn't worth it to not do a frame up.  Admittedly, 50% of the reason was because it's purple. I think I threw up in my mouth a little everytime I looked at it. So, it exploded onto my shop floor one evening.

Stitch welded it in, mostly because my helmet was so dirty I was flying blind.

After I finished the swing arm gussets, I found new lenses for my helmet. I put them in before making the sub frame gussets... and it was like a miracle!

Very well could be, I've read that the 86 frame being the "strongest" of the bunch, albeit heavy. Hard to say.
And thanks, I agree! That purple was godawful.

Yeah I agree most definitely... She's had a frame swap at some point; not entirely surprising, the thing is a bastard child. Thanks man! Yeah I made my own gussets, didn't seem worth it to buy them.

What did you use for radiator hoses? Looking good by the way.

I honestly don't know, it's the same hoses that were on it. They look like they could be heater hose for an automotive application, I can look the next time I'm in my shop and let you know. Thanks!

I would like to add a coolant piss bottle, if anyone has any input for creative ways to do this I'd love to hear them.

Turned down the mutilated / incorrect seal diameters on the spocket / rotor hubs and spun out collars to bring it up to the correct diameter. Press fit at .002". No idea what this axle is out of but it's going to work lol.

Well, shit got a little interesting after this last post. I was truckin' right along with the reassembly, went to install the new carrier and found it to be way bigger than the swing arm opening. Turns out it's a 3-wheeler swing arm. Naturally I discover this AFTER installing all new bearings into the swing arm and bolting it back onto the chassis. Grr.  To be continued...

On a positive note, I scored a set of pro-peg nerfs, an aluminum airbox with Uni filter and boot, an Alba aluminum gas cap, a Maier race hood, and a DuraBlue adjustable axle of craigslist.
