Title: Wife's 86 rebuild
Post by: broken1 on May 17, 2015, 12:59:53 AM
We picked this 86 up 2 years ago from the 2nd owner. It was last tagged in 05 & just sat in a garage covered in sand & years of grime. Doing a basic stock rebuild & left all the original coatings in tact because they were in good shape & I want this to be a rider & not a blingin dune bike like mine. It's a pain to keep everything shiny. The engine, swingarm & a-arms have been off this bike before, other than that I'm the first one to ever completely tear it apart & turn it into a lifesize exploded view. It's a nice survivor:

The swinger bolt was frozen to the pivot collar so I ended up having to cut it out, my first idea was futile:

Found a couple cracks on the left front & left lower engine mounts. I drilled the cracks & plated over them with 16ga:

added support under the lower mount

Reassembly, my wife liked the red better than the blue so red it is:

Finished the calipers & both MC's today & got it on the ground (been on the stand for a year & a half) just need to bleed the brakes, torque the rear suspension bolts & put the engine back in. Getting close..... Braaapppp!

I wanted to say thanks to croat1, Hawaiiysr, mandom250r, Pumashine, spiritaces, beobe99 Turftamer, & Daniel370r for the parts I got to use on this project. Especially Joe because he gave me the hood, oem grab bar & chrome shifter:respekt:

Looks really nice Kevin. Makes me want to hurry up and finish my budget dune/future son build.. So are you still in the hunt for a red tank? Because that tank looks pretty darn nice.. Your really smart going the easy maintenance route. My wife's banshee's side cases, and cylinders are all polished along with all the controls and silencers, my pilot cylinder has fully polished cases and my saber is fully polished. I'm really tired of the whole elbow grease bandwagon.. I'm ready to just get out, ride and have some fun.

Updating this since I got my wife's 86 running last August. I rebuilt most everything on it except the engine, I did pull the top end & hone & re-ring it & pulled the side covers for inspection & cleaning though. When we got it the previous owner said it hadn't been started for over 8 years & I never ran it or rode it before completely stripping it down, it ended up starting on the 2nd kick! We've run about 7gal through it so far & it runs real strong for being mostly stock.  This is how it looks currently, I put some junk fenders on it because my wife's a novice rider & there's lots of tree's out here:

My wife like's the red version better so I've slowly been collecting the pieces & cleaning them up. Got the seat cover from ebay. Took it & a spare pan & foam to a local upholstery shop & should have it back by next week:
(http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j332/scrappyfab/DSCN3762_zpsv27pu3s8.jpg) (http://s1080.photobucket.com/user/scrappyfab/media/DSCN3762_zpsv27pu3s8.jpg.html)
Found the bare tank on ebay too but the seller lived just 30min south so I got it from him directly. It was faded almost completely white on top but steel wool & mothers aluminum polish & a powerball cleaned it up:

The hood I got from Joe was redone with plastic renew & looked very nice but I can't leave things alone so I sanded it off & polished it:

Smart man. Just tell her what she wants to hear. In the end of the day if it keeps her mouth shut and the R in the garage then go for it.

Got the seat back from the upholstery shop & got it all put together in red/white:

Was planning on taking updated pics at the dunes today but when I was going over the bike the other day to get it ready for the trip I discovered a bad stator side crank bearing. I'm hoping to be able to just change the bearings & put it back together. Got my fingers crossed for no internal damage.
