Title: R stalls out in first gear...
Post by: mgleason05 on August 22, 2015, 08:03:58 PM
I went to fire up the r this evening, and she started up fine, but when I shifted into first gear to go, she bogged down and stalled out. Never had this issue before... I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting, so some possibilities would be great... She was running fine last weekend in the dunes at silver lake...

She was running fantastic last week. Hmmmm. Dying under load it what it sounds like issue you have.

Reeds? I just checked mine before the silver trip and found two ready to fail. Very wore down at the edges and the carbon fiber was starting to break down from normal wear. Worth a look see.  Plug is obvious to check although if fouled most likely would not fire at all.

Could be caliper locking up.. does to free wheel in neutral?

Pulled off the exhaust, carb, and reeds... I will post a pic since I don't know what I'm looking at when I get back from church. Thanks for the responses guys! I don't think it's an issue with the spark plug because it will fire up and idle, and the caliper is not locked up because it rolls just fine in neutral... John, if it's clutch related, would it be plates or basket, or something else?

The plates would be grabbing and it would be like no clutch. Shifting into gear without a clutch would jump from standstill and die like you said. Simple check your cable adjustment did not come loose.

Tony - The cable is working properly, as I try to release slowly into the gear and as it begins to engage, it bogs down and stalls out. If I pull the clutch cable, it will go back to idling, but will bog a little bit when i give it gas. Then after a while, it clears up again, but will do the same thing when I try to put it in gear. When I fire it up, I can give her gas and it revs just fine... Here's a pic of the reeds...(http://forums.trx250r.org/vbulletin_imports/908_6188_2017-04-18_6185.jpg)(http://forums.trx250r.org/vbulletin_imports/908_6189_2017-04-18_9050.jpg)

At first I thought it was a simple clutch issue but you're saying you can engage the clutch, put it in gear, and still be fine along w/ Revving the engine? That the problem occurs when you release the clutch to ride away applying load, correct?

I'm the opposite of an expert on engines and more so on bottom ends, but maybe it's possible your having issues with your gears / tranny as if somethings binding up causing drag? When you go to let the clutch out does it seem like your dragging something causing the bike to squat a tad? Have you tried revving higher and feathering the clutch to "fight" through it?

Sorry for not being clearer... My clutch works fine for engaging/disengaging, and in neutral, the revving works at first. When I put the bike into first gear, I slowly let the clutch handle out, and as I try to give the bike gas to keep from stalling, it bogs down like the engine is flooded... the bike will start to move a little, then will stall out... if I disengage the clutch before it stalls, i have to let the bike idle for a minute before revving it again, or it will stall out (disengaged or in neutral). I'm at a loss. I just pulled the carb apart and it looks clean...

Are you getting enough fuel? Strainers in the tank plugged? Tank vent? Sounds like it's starving.

didnt realize there was a strainer in the tank... i will have to check that out... there is (was)gas in the line to the carb though...

It sounds fuel related, clean the carb double check your float setting i be had that issue when the float weren't set correctly. Is there an online fuel filter? If so is it clean or get rid of it and try again, is the petcock allowing enough fuel to flow?

Drained the tank today through the petcock. No obstructions there... As for the float level, I've never adjusted one before... Would a float go out of position after a while?
