Title: Project "Retro with modern twist"
Post by: 250rmanpuma on November 20, 2015, 09:14:19 PM
Hey guys.

I started this 86 250r project with buying a frame.  I started another trx250r project about 2.5 to 3 years ago but got way over my head with costs and I had to part with it.  So here is attempt number two.  I love the late 80's hondas with white frames and red plastics so what better than that on my 250r.  Going for stock cylinder (ported of coarse), TRX9 ESR exhaust, laegers +2 swingarm, 88/89 style Full Bore red plastic, +2 +1 full flight a-arms, Stage 3 Elka shocks,  41mm carb, etc.  Im looking to do black wheels and give it a modern look, but cant decide on Hipers or Alba Beadlock look a likes (Im leaning towards Albas as they are half the cost.  I wont be racing it just a sand dunner and a joy ride bike.    Here is what I started with fresh from powder coater two weeks ago.

Title: More work done.
Post by: 250rmanpuma on November 27, 2015, 08:32:35 PM
Got some more work done and ran into some frustration.  I found out one of the bolt holes on the frame where the footpegs bolt to has a busted off bolt in it.  Worked on easy outting the bolt and drilling for over an hour with no success.  I had the quad together before powder but of coarse I didnt check the footpeg holes. O well,  more work ahead.  Got master cylinder polished,  got the frontend adjusted for Chamber, Caster and toe.  And a Special Thanks to croat1 for the Laeger swingarm stickers,  they turned out great  THANKS AGAIN!

Going to be a real nice quad. Where did you find that extremely rare 88 fullbore front?

Got it from a member on the 250r.net forum about a year ago.    I definitely like them.  They have scuffs on them and not really any scratches mainly scuffs. Im trying to figure out hoe to polish them out without sanding them.  I have been using rubbing compound and polishing compound but not really a huge difference yet.

Title: More progress and set backs

Ok, Got the pegs hole drilled out and all fixed.  Got radiator shrouds on with decals put on.  Got the front end dialed in for caster and camber. After reading some threads about a 400ex/trx450r bumpers bolting on, just have to shim the bottom mounts.  Well thats not the case on my 86 stock frame.  You have to shim both uppers and lowers and lower holes are off by about 1/8 inch so now I need to build a adaptor of some sort.  Axle has been delayed by over two weeks along with a month delay with the cylinder.  Glad I started when I did as with all these delays with people/companies getting my parts I dont think I would have been ready for the first ride come late winter.  All is good and moving forward, trying to stay patient.

Looks really good so far. Don't worry about the fab work as sometimes it makes the results look better in your eyes
because you made it work. Waiting on parts is just part of the build. At least you have time to work on it. I've had all my parts for a couple of months and still haven't had time to start on mine. Good luck with your build.

got some more progress done.  Got my axle back from the chrome shop.  Looks great.  Had an issue with getting it through the carrier and found a spot that had some chrome that prohibited the axle from going through.  Then ran into another issue with the new rear brake disc I bought being wrong and about 5/16 larger in diameter and it hitting the caliper.  Wheels came in, they are Alba beadlocks with some Hoosier MX style tires.  I finally got my cylinder back from my port & polisher so I polished the cylinder.  What a pain in the ass that was,  Im tired of coughing up black stuff (thats with wearing a mask, and face shield with googles).  Hope to get the topend on the motor and motor leak down test this weekend and mount it into the quad next week.........fingers crossed.  Its getting closer but still lots of work. Well I have been trying to finish this project up but had to get some other things rolling first.  Now I am back at it and I have everything hooked up and no spark.  Coil, Stator all met the Ohms rest. readings per Manuel. I am thinking my CDI that I bought that was suppose to work is not functioning.  I double checked ground connection was good, brand new on/off kill switch.  One question though, the wiring harness has a green and black/white wire female connections that are in the area of the harness where the stator wires hook to.  I assume those two wires are for if I wanted to hook up a tether switch I could use those which would make it an open circuit anyways.  So can I leave thoses both unconnected?  So does anyone have a known working CDI I could buy from you?

Thanks
Tyler
