Title: How much power will a stock tranny stand
Post by: Jar350r on July 04, 2013, 11:52:03 AM
Just wondering how much power a stock tranny can handle

That depends on how the tranny is treated while riding and it's condition. They're pretty bulletproof until you get to the 60-70hp mark if you ask me. Many even run very good conditioned ones in 90-100hp big bores, but at any moment they will throw gears through the cases.

High horse drag motors should definitely go billet 1-5 from Nate McCoy.

This is just my opinion from my experience. Anything over a 330cc I wouldn't run stock tranny gears. I had a puma and prox370 on gas break 2nd gear and sling it through the left case. Had about $7k into a build, drove for 4 hours and within an hour of riding had 2nd gear laying in the sand.

Well got about 60 to 65 but never put it in the sand just track . I bet the sand a paddles will be hard on it

It can also be the condition of the tranny you start with.  I have found that of the trannies I have broken it is always second gear.  You can back cut the dogs and treat the tranny and it will help it live.  I have seen oem overrides do fine in high hp bikes but when you start shifting the tranny at wot on a non-overide that is when they break.  I think the puma motors were the first setup to really be plagued with tranny issues.  It was enough hp to break it.  The saber will do the same but most of those built have overrides.

I have been talking to Nate about this lately. I think he only has 1 maybe 2 sets of gears left.

With the dwindling supply of good used gears, is there a need for a set of replacement billet gears. Something that will be a drop in for a stock set-up.

I use my current bike for everything, dune riding, dirt trails, and 300ft. Although I would like a over ride for drag racing, I don't think I would like it for dune riding.

So, is there enough of a need for them to get them made?

I thought Nate was having more billet tranys made? With a thinner 4th counter shaft gear so do have to mod the gear or fork to prevent them rubbing. At least that's what he told me last October when I bought my billet trans I think he had 4 left at that point.

I had the same thing happen to me twice.  Prox-370 about 6o hp and it was 2nd gear both times.  I recently got a set of Baldwin gears from Mark himself.  We will see how these do on my new Sphynx.

My stock back cut trans holds up fine in my gas 370 and I ran a stock override that was back cut and cryo'ed in my puma for 2 seasons it held up fine.

Don't mean to steal your thread, but since the topic is started, does anyone know of a quality place o get gears polished or cryo'ed?

I know hybrid engineering can have them done for you.  Pete was great to work with.  Also I had wcr backcut and cryo one for me.  They usually do banshees but they have done several hondas.

Have blown out 2nd gear on a 350 pro-x and 431 puma. Since then I do not get to excited to race. OEM case half and tranny runs $500. Do have 100 hours on the Puma without any problem.

Yep, Ive busted 2nd twice, I still cringe sometimes on a second gear start when Im giving it 100%.

I haven't had it all quoted but I talked to the guy at an off road race he was sponsoring. The prices he was throwing out there were not outrageous.  The parts have to be completely oil free for him though.

And I am not sure of what will be going back on top of those cases just yet.

I believe I bought them in the fall of 2011.  I had a set of pep zps built by mark about a year earlier.  So I called him up asking about gears and he told me he had one set left but it was used.  So I told him if the were in good shape I would take them.  So Mark had them sonic checked ( I can't think of the right word ) to make sure there was no cracks in them.  They checked out good so I just threw my motor in a box and shipped it to him and he installed them.  I have very little ride time on them but so far so good.

I bought the last McCoy billet tranny.. I actually bought 2 but was refunded 1/2 when he realized he had only one left. We should start a thread on serious buyers for a billet 5 speed STANDARD transmission because he told me it's in the works for these bigger duners.. Maybe with enough interest and money down the ball would get rolling...

I'm on board for a non-override set as well. I talked to Nate about this 6-8 months ago and he didn't know if there'd be a lot of interest.  It'd be great to get a serious buyer list together and get this moving.

I've heard one of nates billet trans breaking.  And I currently may have the second once I tear into my locked up lower end   Later this week. He has said if he does then again they would be non overridden

Morse do you know what broke on the other billet you know about?  Second gear?  I've heard Nate doesn't have any left so hope you can get parts.

Bam or Albright motors?  He told John he had replacement gears but at 300 a piece. Ill be real upset if there is a broken gear in there I'm hoping for a simple fork or stuck in gear.  Like I said I'll tear it down this week and will post the findings

Nate has had 2 or 3 breaks all coming from the oem countershaft teeth failing and ruining first gear. He was talking about upping the cost and including a stronger countershaft along with the tranny. Will the billet no overridden would be the same gear ratios he offers now and only a 5 speed..

Just sent my tranny to Neil for inspection, cryo, back cut, and polish.  It is supposed to be a decent price and about a 3 week turn around time.  Ill post more when i get the tranny back.

Judging by the responses in this thread, It seems like 2nd is the one breaking more often. Would be interesting to know if this is form 2nd gear launches or is it happening during 1-2 shifts?

Why not just replace 2nd with a billet gear like the Banshee guys do? Or would it just move the weak point down the line so to speak.

Derek.

Looking at all the Banshee transmission options makes me jealous.

Depending on price i'd definitely be interested in a set. Mine are all pitted and i'm not confident in them

These are usually caused by shifting from 1st to 2nd or trying to start in 2nd without having it all the way in gear. I have broke 2 sets of cases with the 2nd gear slip. I have also run 2 puma's and the pilot cylinder powered bikes for 5 years with out any tranny problems. I weigh 250Lbs and run the hell out of my bikes in deep wet sand. OEM tranny only cost $200 and new cases are being made.
