I made a post in the intake section trying to track down a running issue and after days of going through everything,I got my wifes new 1988 TRX250R running ok BUT something was still not right..When we first got it,I pushed the kicker and told the guy I didn't wanna trade my 2 KX500's because compression felt super low, wasn't even close to my 1997 YZ250..I could spin it over with 2 fingers but he swore up and down its perfect and the TRX250R's compression was lower than other 250's due to the 3 layer head gasket..I looked it up and found that these quads do use a 3 layer gasket so I believed him..Ended up getting it running OK like I said above but I knew something wasn't right so did a compression test..Kicked it over WOT until the tester needle stopped which stopped at 145PSI..Told a few people that owned 250R's and they said thats way too low..Well I ended up doing a fresh top end and while I had the Paul Turner National top end off,I give it a good sanding and polish..Not the best but looks 10000X better..Got it back together after 5 days and fell in love today :) ..The compression is AWESOME so I know when we ride it again with the new top end, power will be night and day..I already plan on doing quite a bit to it at the end of this coming season but for now,im doing my heat cycles and getting it ready so the wife can ride it..This was my 3rd heat cycle and I plan on doing 3 more tomorrow..Wish I could ride quads like I can bikes because I really like it..I'll have a bunch of videos to post once spring hits.. really glad to hear its running good like huntertools said your hooked the first sign of a 250R addiction is "I already plan on doing quite a bit to it"

Nope,I won't be riding it much at all and don't ever plan on getting one..I have spinal fusion in my neck and lower back so riding quads are way too ruff on me but,I will jump on it every once in a while and open it up but thats about it..Nope,she won't beable to start it lol..Something i'll have to do everytime we go out and with her still learning/stalling,i'll have to do it alot lol..Don't want it looking like carp so already plan on having the frame powder coated at the end of the season along with more polishing and rebuilding the whole lower end..I really like it and plan on hooking it up for her as it will be well taken care of VS going to shit like the last owner was letting it do..Thanks guys..

Did you bore it and install a new piston or just install new rings? If so, what was the piston to cylinder wall clearance upon assembly. It sounds loose (a lot of piston slap) like the piston to cylinder wall clearance is over .006".
New rings will restore the compression but will not tighten the piston to cylinder wall clearances. Excessive piston to cylinder wall clearance will cause the piston skirts to crack and break off.

A buddy checked it for me and its a broken radiator shroud..All I did was new rings, wrist pin bearing and gaskets..You can hear it in this video before the rebuild and its fine (one im posting now),fast forward to 1:45,thats when I started it..In the rebuild video,I tried to zip-tie the shroud until I can get it aluminum welded.. Well man, piston is slapping away..Didn't really look into it too much because it was fine before and during the first start up,we thought the radiator shroud was chattering ..Took the shroud off yesterday and fired it up,still chattering ..Did the old screw driver to the ear trick and put it on every part of the engine, coming right from the top ends..Its all good because the season is over anyways and on a good note, the bore will cost me $65.00,piston kit $120.00 and $20.00 in gaskets..Not running it anymore and will get it done as soon as taxes come in...
