Howdy everyone. I have an ignition problem. My wheeler won't start when it gets cold. It runs great it has a new carb that has been jetted. And the jetting is correct. It fires right up when it's 60 degrees out when it gets around 25 degrees it wont start. I was thinking my stator or something getting weak. I noticed that it starts real hard if I try to start it with the headlight on It's a 86 trx 250R. I scoped the ignition system when the very first time I ever started it and it took quite a high velocity on the kickstart lever to get any readings. It just seemed that it was a little too much speed required to get anything out of it. Cant even see the spark on the plug when you check. But it's there, it runs. I am not very familiar with this ignition system.
don't know of any of its idiosyncrasies. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the OEM ignition is very unreliable. it is the only weak link in the trx250r. I and many others will suggest getting a cr250r ignition. this, i assure you will solve all your problems. the money you spend on the cr ignition is pseudo-therapeutic. you will be healthier mentally not worrying about the stock ignition.

Are you running premium or race gas? My 310 and 330 both with CR ignitions will not start when it is below 40. Aim the space heater at them for 1 minute and they will fire right up. I think my issue is the race gas doesn't atomize well enough to start the motor when it is cold outside.

You know i' have heard the ignition systems on these were not the greatest. But your absolutely right with that being about the only weak link on one of these. CR 250 ignition is the way to go huh? Well thanks for basically confirming my suspicions. I had a 85 ATC 250R that would start 2nd kick in 0 degrees weather everytime. Is it just a TRX thing ?

No the unit is totally stock

To see the spark ya really need to have someone kick it with some speed. Also if you think it is weak try closing the plug gap a lil bit.

Have you pulled the stator cover ? Make sure its not all rusty crusty in there !
-
Does anyone know the exact cause of the ignition problem ?
-
Have you tried what was suggested ? Or look at the condition of stator ?

No I have not checked the stator. Which is of course my next step. I just built this thing from the ground up. I got a excellent used 87 totally stock engine. At a very good price. If the stator is bad I just found a HO replacement at 64 % off from MISTER ELECTRICAL. So they want only 52.00 $ for it The CR 250 upgrade sounds good but I need a headlight. I love night riding. Plus I prefer to keep things as stock as possible. It's really easier that way. I've been a mechanic for over 30 years and in my opinion stock is always better. Much easier to deal with in the long run. I don't mind custom stuff at all. But I prefer stock when it comes to something like this. And if I need a better CDI unit I can always get one of those I reckon. What else is there. The flywheel. The engine runs strong i put a brand new 34 mm carb on there. I plan to do a couple of engine mods. I've got a ported 86 cylinder that I want to punch out and install that with a spacer plate when it's time for a top end over haul. With a .010" copper head gasket. The engine is still on it's first bore 66 mm. So I need to check for a top end job soon. But it has excellent compression and runs great. You would think that from the overall condition of the engine that the stator would be in good shape. But it is not a good idea to assume anything when your trying to diagnose something.

i seen spotless exterior of a engine , but the gasket was bad for the stator cover and seen the most rusty pos flywheel . an the bike just stopped firing one day .

Just found this very problem on my R. The stator side must of got water in it last time I washed it (last fall) & when I pulled the cover for inspection the other day I found a fair amount of rust. It looked nice & clean in there the last time I rode it.

Check your pulse coil and that it is around .010" to .013" also check your spark plug gap and make sure it's around .018 to .020" see if that helps..

Well I checked the stator and it was super clean in there. I changed it out and it runs great. The only problem is the kickback. It kicks back something fierce. Is th(http://forums.trx250r.org/vbulletin_imports/1200_7367_2017-04-18_4081.jpg) there anything I can do about that. I just built this thing. Never had one before now. I love it. Here's a couple pictures of it. I have spark when I hand crank the engine which I didn't before(http://forums.trx250r.org/vbulletin_imports/1200_7368_2017-04-18_5302.jpg)

Keep in mind the track record of the aftermarket ignition components is 1000x worse then any honda option be it stock or cr.

yeah I kinda figured that
