Title: Newbie joining the 250r side
Post by: QSG250r on March 16, 2016, 11:20:19 PM
Hi all,

I just picked up a new to me 87 TRX 250R, the guy I got it from has owned it since 1990 and he works on aircraft on the Air Force base here, so it's well taken care of.  I did a lot of research before choosing this quad, as I'm fairly new to quads.  I grew up with a couple dirt bikes, but never owned a quad.  It's got a minor port and polish, a DG pipe, and a K&N filter as far as mods.  The chain and sprockets are almost new, frame looks really clean with no cracks.. I'm excited!

Is there anything I should do now? I want to eventually redo all the plastics, graphics, mod the engine, suspension etc etc.. I don't know where to begin haha.

So here's a pic I got before coming inside, I just picked it up tonight and I'll get more pics later if you all want:

That's a nice R and welcome to the forum lots of knowledgeable people on are willing to help if those are OEM  plastics I'd buy a beater set and put the OEMs away

Welcome. That's a really nice looking bike. I would try and keep the stock look, but what ever you want, just go for it. More than enough info and help here to get what you want.

Allen

Welcome to the forum. That's a sharp looking quad you got there. My advice would be: get to know her for a little bit before changing many things. Just start with some basic maintenance first. Make sure everything is greased, air filter clean, brake fluid topped off, check the condition of the reeds. Check the bearings for play (wheel bearings, axle bearings, steering stem). Check chain slack.

Thanks guys, the plastics are original, but they look better in the pic than they are, they look all cracked and have a couple cracks in the back. First thing I think needs attention is tires and suspension. Any suggestions?

I'll check all the bearings next, the chain is near new and has the perfect amount of slack right now.

I forgot to mention that the previous owner also put a new clutch in with a Hinson basket.

First thing I do is take off the foam filter and through it in the trash and replace with K&N

the great air filter debate has been going on forever lol. from personal experience every bike ive tried to use k&n's on when I pull the filter after a ride to clean I could always wipe some dust/dirt from the intake tract. no matter how light the reside in the tract is, its still too much to risk destroying my motor. switched to two stage unis and have had perfectlu clean intake tracts ever since. the supposed "performance gain" of the higher flow is not noticeable if there is one so its a no brainer for me.

What exact intake are you using? I'm fairly new to these, I know cars well and am mechanically inclined. Just learning the trx and quads in general right now.

It really needs new plastics and wheels/tires. I'm not a suspension expert but it may need that as well. I took some close ups of the plastics so you can see why it needs new ones.

Honestly the best upgrade you can buy is high quality well  built after market suspension that is professionally valved for your specific machine and type of riding (woods, mx, dunes, drag, TT, etc) stock 250r suspension sucks a big one. There are many very good companies out there. Custom Axis, Elka, PEP, mototwoz, fox, and a few others. Mainly you need to determine realistically what type of riding you will do most of, your weight, and how aggressive it will get ridden. That determines how you buy used shocks or how you have new ones built if you decide to go new. Also you will want to consider stronger, possibly wider aftermarket a-arms and axle at the same time as suspension. I say this b/c you need to match your shocks with your a-arms. Deciding whether you stay with standard travel or change to long travel shocks is important b/c after market a-arms are made either for STD or long travel suspension. I prefer long travel but it just depends on what type of riding your going to do with it. If going with long travel then it's very important to decide on brand of a-arms you plan on buying before buying shocks B/c different brands use different length long travel shocks. Ex: laegers long travel arms use 19 3/4" shocks, roll design long travels use 18 3/4", Gibson long travels use 19". These are just examples but if going that route every shock company will know the numbers for mating long travel(LT) shocks to brand of arms.  After suspension is done then good rubber matched with your type of riding is important. Control of your quad is key. Then motor then other parts follow.

Thanks for the detailed reply Robsessed86! I will be just fixing up a few things and doing tires and suspension before I do motor work, unless there's a few simple mods I can do.

Nice looking R & welcome to the site.... You can ziptie the cracks in the plastic & use them as your beater set. Also if it the previous owner didn't already install one, an 85 atc head gasket can be used to raise the compression a little.

Sweet, I might do that.

What plastics should I replace them with? I think Maier is the only choice unless I can find a set of used ones.  I've read that the Maier plastics aren't that great, so... Suggestions?

For oem plastic your best bet may be to keep an eye on your local craigslist. They turn up now & than, I picked up a set of mostly uncut oem's that are a little nicer than yours for 80 so the deals are out there if you watch for them.Typically people selling nice oem plastic on e-bay or forums know what they got & the price reflects that. I don't have any personal experience with aftermarket plastic but I heard maier's not as bad as they used to be & who knows if fullbore will ever make R plastic again.

Screw fullbore oem all the way, build the motor first and then the suspension is always what I've done but I'm a bit backwards being a dune drag guy.

These guys got it all WRONG. here are the first TWO things every new 250R owner should know.

Firts, Trx250r.Org is THE BEST forum with the best knowledgeable members and professional builders on the net hands down.

Second, you should never do business with a company in Rancho Cuccmungo, California that claims to be a professional national winning business with knock off discontinued OEM parts without Honda packaging. Regardless of how good the deal may sound do not go there. The brethren here on .org will be happy to answer any and all questions you may have. We will always point you in the right direction.

Lastly, welcome:) we like pictures so keep them coming.
