Title: Snorkel for big bores
Post by: dem3500 on May 11, 2016, 02:50:29 PM
Anyone come up with a snorkel for big bores? My 363 to be specific. was just curious. Currently I have a 2" shop vac hose kinda cobbeled together in my air box. Works very well but I'm always thinking ahead. I have an idea in my head for another nicer, cleaned design I just figured I'd pick your brains.

How many of us ride under water is a good question.

Snorkel pvc pipe a few elbows some glue or cement and a stack you guys in the woods and water will be set like a mud boggers. Lol in all seriousness though you guys are running big motor and holding them back with limiting the air you can get with air boxes let alone lids but wanting as much power as possible there has to be some give and take.

Yes I agree 100% there's give and take. There will always be more to be gained but for me I have plenty of power. From the one race I ran that there was a significant amount of water I could tell you every quad that had an open air box. Then there was me who could just blast through it without a second thought! So for me the trade off is a good thing. I can't be the only one who is glad they have a sealed air box

I ride deep heavy woods, snow, rain, mud..  I avoid deep sitting water and I've never had a problem yet since I removed my air box!

Could you post up a few pictures of what you're dealing with so we can throw some ideas at you?

I get what you're saying Mike but when you're doing it competitively and running through or across tank traps you'll swamp a motor quick.

Then you are absolutely right!  I'm just a weekend warrior, so if I encounter water I just turn around or go around it lol.. If your competing then by all means you have to protect your motor!!

I've killed engines just from hitting a puddle with no airbox lol

I would suggest, using silicone hoses and connectors for a finished look.  Its also pretty cheap.  Same stuff we use for intercoolers, etc...  Just pc together what you need from Aluminum pipe, (thin walled) and use silicone hose connectors when you need to make a bend.  I use this stuff all the time.  Works really well.

Otherwise, I could 3D print something depending on that you're looking for.  I did a snorkle airbox for an XC rider in the Upper Northwest.  Huge water crossings, etc..

are you talking about 3d printing with rubber or silicone? theres only one part i might need like that but i still have to dig in and fiddle with it more. when i get a chance to get back out and mess with it ill snap pics. it will be way easier to to explain it with pics

The one on the right is the snorkle lid..

I can do either..  I prefer PP plastic right now, been having awesome luck with that stuff.  I'm working on some new printable polyurethan rubber.

That lid is pretty sexy! That's the same general idea I had in my head. Using the snorkel connection be in the lid. How does it connect onto your lid? My thought was an aluminum tube (or maybe 2) going into the lid on a steel angle and have the hose clamp to it and then up and under the seat

Its riveted to the lid, with sealer tape

Is there a snorkel tube running up to the front or is the lid the snorkel itself?

Looks like you got a little bit of water in there! Just clean it with a rag and you will be good to go! Haha

The lid is the snorkel, using gravity to work for you.  The opening faces down.  Then has to travel up and over into the lid

Ah ok cool. Now I assume this is only intended to protect against splashing rather that a deep water crossing. Correct?

There is hydrophobic material under the lid, forgot to mention that too.

Nah it works in deep water, just not over the seat deep water.

This was the first iteration, which didn't work too good.. That is the design on the left on the tailgate, for this application... this is a 60hp motor, btw.

New design installed on my personal 450r, mines and MX bike, so I don't need it but was checking fitment...  get the idea of layout.

I run the cfm airbox with some outerwear material fastened down as a lid. So far so good dealing with splashes and what not.... Also using silicon adapter/hose to go from airbox to BB motor. If you want a pic i can get one. That Robl one wasn't ready when i was building my r :(
