Hey all, just looking for honest opinions. I recently purchased a 1989 TRX250R. It has a K&N Filter & Outerwear Precharger, Keihin 39mm PWK Carb, Boyesen RAD Valve, Pro Design Cool Head, PTR "ELIMINATOR" Pipe and Quiet Fat Boy 2 Silencer. I am 6'5 tall and weigh about 255 lbs. Do you think I would be good to go to ride the Oregon dunes on this bike without blowing it up? I only worry because of my weight and the resistance of the sand on the paddles. I don't want to blow this bike if a t all possible. Please let me know your thought when you have time. Thanks, Pete

As long as it is jetted properly, ride it like as much as you like.

I agree with Huntertools. Make sure that it is jetted properly before you go. If you are unsure, make is very rich and change out the jets once you get there. You should take along main jets 150-185 with you. Then just change them as needed.
-
I'm a little bigger then you...give her hell!
-
You should be fine just make sure it's jetted good, what paddle are you going to run?
-
Skeans1 - I have a set of 9 paddle haulers and a set of 8 paddle Sand Stars. I am thinking the 9 paddle haulers would be to much hook up on the sand.
-
rablack21 - Thanks for the advice. I am not sure what you meant when you said "If you are unsure, make is very rich". Are you saying it should be rich or not? Thanks bud.
-
He meant jet it on the rich side to be safe and jet down as needed

Gotcha! Thx for the explanation.

Since my carb is a Duncan Racing, pre-jetted Keihin 39mm PWK Carb, I wonder if they have a jetting / elevation chart? Anyone know?
-
Cheap easy way to get some main jets is from Eddie Sanders with his jet wrench. Paddle 9 might be do able or could hook too much it's personal preference I like bite but I'm on the other end of the scale for weight. Another good option would be some Sand skate 2's if you can find a set they hook good as well as have some slip.

Take the float bowl off & see what main & pilot you have first before you get more jets. I weigh 180 & my bike has a similar setup with a 185 main jet. If you get jets stick to the upper 170's & 180's for the mains & 45-52 for the pilot, that range should get you dialed in out there.
-
You don't need to worry about your weight. I am 6'2" and 280lbs and I ride my 310 hard in the dunes. I run 9 paddle haulers and love them. I agree with the other fellas here that you should #1 figure out how your carb is jetted and #2 start off rich and work your way down. Good luck and happy duning.

I'm fat to lol I'd prefer the haulers over the Itp sand stars. The sand stars are a lot heavier than the haulers

Thanks for the information and advice! I really appreciate it.

Thanks for advice. The big difference between us is that you have a 310 and my bike still has the stock 250. I have heard the 310 upgrade is like having a completely different bike in comparison to the stock 250.

That is a good point. The haulers are quite a bit lighter than the Sand Stars.

I can fix your displacement problem. Mine is a 330 so would not be much help for were to jet. But I would take both sets of paddles with you. Try them both.

Great idea on taking both paddles to the dunes. I have both sets mounted on wheels. Duh, why didn't I think of that. 330cc TRX250R's seem like monsters. That said, I am thinking of keeping my motor a 250cc or maybe go to a 275cc. I have heard that once you go above 275cc it's lot more likely for motor problems to occur.

I've had no issues with any of my motors from a stock cylinder to a 431 puma.

That's good to hear! I have known a couple of guys with 330 ESR setups that had nothing but problems with their motors. From what I remember, they were always blowing up. I believe the Duncan Racing web site says that a 275cc setup is the most reliable out of all their motor increase options. I guess, it's probably like anything else. Some engines are upgraded properly and others not so much. Most of the guys I know around here (Roseburg, Oregon) are bailing wire and duck tape mechanics. They have never seen a service manual and if they had one it would probably just be used as a beer coaster!

I to have not had any issues with my 330. Since you are in Oregon. If looking for more out of your motor. Would definitely give Pete at hybrid a call. He does great work and fair on his prices.

Nice motors. You build them or did someone else? Whomever did it, that's nice work. Looks like one power valve and one non-power valve. Which motor runs the best?

Before I had the puma I had a zilla and a 363 sphinx to me there's no need for a power valve for us in the Oregon dunes especially down in the tree shots.
-
I built all of them I like the power delivery of the old pro-x cylinder but that's all porting ,,, I talked myself out of the power valve but it shipped before I could cancel it,,,, it runs fine just don't think it was worth all the extra moving parts ,, and it has broke once already

Glad to know that bit of info. I haven't been too keen on getting a power valve in all honesty. Just another part to break.

Nice job on building the motors. Also, thanks for the power valve info. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have not been too keen on getting one. Just more parts that can go bad.
