Title: TRX/Zilla build
Post by: rjt500r on October 15, 2016, 08:44:29 PM
Starting the tear down of my Zilla and the mock up in the 89 250r frame. Need to get it into a roller to get it over to Arlan to get the exhaust built. I'll post more pics as I go.

Seems like from memory a trx pipe would work.

When we was in Oklahoma a few weeks ago there was a group that had a ltr450,z400,lt250, 86 250r all with 500 zilla motors. They said they find the bikes an send the chassis to the scrap yard lol They also had a 87? With a cr500 on alcohol.
Good luck with the hybrid! I've always wanted this combo

Going to have LED build a pipe, I have an old school LRD on the Zilla now and that is an awesome pipe.

Sounds like my kind of group. lol. I'm keeping my frame and plan on building it down the road, the motor in it now is a small reed motor that I'll use for the hybrid build, I have the original big reed motor for the frame. Kinda of cheating with this build, the 250R frame  came from a member here that he built with the Zilla motor so all the work is done on the frame.

There's nothing like a good big reed motor that's setup.

Yeah for big hp builds they are the better choice, but my small reed has been ported by Jerry Hall and it surprises a lot of people.

I did buy Jeremy's frame. A while back Arlan was talking about getting rid of all his old templates he hasn't used in a long time but I don't know if he did or not. I did talk to him a couple of months ago and he is on board with building my pipe for the hybrid.

Have the Zilla apart and the motor in the frame. Working on the front mounts. Talked with Arlan on Thursday, it will be a hand built custom pipe. Dropping it off in a couple of weeks to get the pipe built. Meanwhile a lot of cleaning and painting of parts.

Clearance issue, yes, problem ,no. I will have to heat and reform the tank in a small spot for the spark plug. Or I could run the KTM short plug, but I will most likely reshape the tank.

Thanks. I'm actually done with all the fabrication, all my parts are bought just waiting on my Works shocks so I can get it into a roller then bring it to Arlan to get the exhaust built. Once it's a roller I'll snap a couple of pics before sending it to Arlan.

Well i have both a cr500 dirt bike and a cr500 quad and the Zilla will embarass the quad build everytime, which in all fairness, the pipe is holding it back. Not sure about the dirt bike.

That is one bad ass HonZilla! I'm assuming you'll have the Rad and as much installed (coolant lines too!) so the Pipe won't interfere with anything when you attach everything else....I made that mistake once....better to learn from other's mistakes than you own! :)

Yeah, I spent some time on it yesterday and finished up a bunch of little loose ends. I will get my cylinder head, with the decomp mod, back next week then Arlan wants me to bring it in to him on the first. Once I get it back swap out the dirt tires for paddles, because it will never see dirt as long as I have it, and wait for a break in the weather to try it out.

Getting off topic here while I wait for the first of Dec, no new pics until the exhaust is done. So I thought I would post a couple of pics of my weapon of choice for the dirt. I built this about 5 years ago and love it. 06 CRF450r frame with a 96 CR500 engine with the throw back 86 style plastics and graphics.

Nice build!

Thanks. I had a hard time making the cut in the fender for the kick starter, because the plastics are so damn nice, but it had to be done. The other side will need some trimming for the pipe to clear as well. Decided to go with the raw finish on the pipe, no chrome, I just like the look of the raw pipe. Hopefully I can keep it looking good for a long time. Nothing but waiting left now, Arlan expects it to be about a month before I get back. I'll post pics when I get it back, then a video after the first trip. Can't wait!

Gun oil or atf work great when I had my Shearer make sure you coat after riding for a day on the coast. Is it going to be the zuki left side pipe or a trx right hand style?

Thanks for the tip. The pipe will come out the left side.

Beautiful job on the hybrid Richard. That pipe looks really good on there with the raw finish.

Richard and his wife are awesome people! It was a pleasure to meet them and had a blast riding with them in the dunes. Richard AKA Mr. 500 did a great job on his TRXzilla hybrid. This is one of the many R's that i was looking forward to seeing. i dont think Mr. 500 will mind me sharing some of the pics i took of his rides. The execution of this build is top notch. I have a personal soft spot for this R because we share some of the parts from the original build by MaxxH20. Richard sure did beat me to the finish line. My build is moving at a snails pace if that. Make sure you blow up the pictures of the LED pipe. its a WORK of art not a Wurk of someone elses labor claiming to be your own. On with the pics!

Thanks Josh. It certainly was a pleasure meeting you and getting to ride with you as well. When you get your build done I would love to see it, Corinna and I are always looking for an excuse to travel and we have not made it over to Hawaii yet. I did chat with Maxxh20 recently, he is back in Oregon. Apologies to you guys for the roost.
